Wallabies star Pocock due in NSW court

    AAP
    January 14, 2015, 5:12 am

Wallabies star David Pocock is due to face court after he was charged over chaining himself to machinery during a long-running NSW coal mining protest.

The injured former Australian rugby union captain locked himself to a digger with several people as about 30 others blocked entrances to the Maules Creek mine in the Leard Forest last December.

Pocock, 26, and farmer Rick Laird were arrested by Narrabri police after 10 hours.

"To put a coal mine in the middle of a state forest just doesn't seem to make any sense," he said at the time.

Pocock was charged with several offences including entering enclosed land without a lawful excuse.

His matter is listed for mention at Narrabri Local Court on Wednesday.

Pocock thanks supporters over coal protest

By Lauren Farrow and Sam McKeith
    January 14, 2015, 10:28 am

Former Wallabies captain David Pocock, who was arrested during a coal mine protest in northwest NSW, has thanked his supporters after his court case on the matter was adjourned.

Pocock is facing charges including entering enclosed land without lawful excuse and hindering the working of mining equipment after chaining himself to a digger for 10 hours as part of a blockade at the Maules Creek coal mine in the Leard Forest in November.

On Wednesday, his matter came before Narrabri Local Court where it was adjourned to Gunnedah Local Court on February 4.

His barrister Kenneth Averre indicated representations had been made to the police about the three charges his client faces.

The Brumbies player, who was not in court, took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon following the brief mention.

"My court case has been adjourned until the 4th of Feb. Thanks for the all the support," he tweeted to his more than 76,000 followers.

Pocock has returned to training with the Brumbies as he continues his comeback from a second knee reconstruction.

The Australian Rugby Union last month issued the 46-Test player with a written warning last month over his arrest.

On the same day, the 26-year-old tweeted he would not answer questions about his involvement in the protest at the Maules Creek mine.

He has previously said he hopes his arrest will be "an opportunity to further the conversation about climate change and engage more people in helping to shape what is all of our futures".

His parents always encouraged him to have the courage of his convictions, the backrower has also said.

The Brumbies have said no further action will be taken against Pocock other than the written warning.

David Pocock escapes conviction after pleading guilty to Maules Creek mine protest ch

    AAP
    February 04, 2015 12:25PM

FORMER Wallabies captain David Pocock, who locked himself to a digger during a NSW coalmine protest, has had no conviction recorded against him.

Pocock was arrested after chaining himself to the digger for 10 hours as part of a blockade at the Maules Creek coalmine in the Leard state forest in November.

Pocock was initially charged with three offences, including entering enclosed land without lawful excuse and hindering the working of mining equipment.

But after he pleaded guilty at Gunnedah Local Court on Wednesday to hindering a workman in use of property those offences were withdrawn.
