    The ultimate indignity

The teams for the 2015 RWC have been selected as follows:
    1. The first three teams from each of the four pools of the 2011 RWC.
    2. Eight other teams who win the regional playoffs and/or championships.

Australia is in Pool A of RWC 2015, aka the "Pool of Death", along with England, Wales and Fiji. It is unlikely that Australia would finish behind England, Wales and Fiji in this pool (unlikely, but not impossible - on their day, Fiji can be a threat) but if this did happen, would that mean that the Wallabies would then have to go through the full qualification process, i.e. the FORU Oceania Cup in 2017, in order to qualify for the 2019 RWC.

That would be the final indignity.

It would be an indignity, but it would also be what the current shambles deserves.

Things have been a little tough these past few years. Even so, that is an extremely hypothetical scenario. I'd still back them with money to top the pool. Right now if I could.

    Fiji are not a threat.

Haven't beaten Australia in over 50 years and their closet result since the game went professional is the 55-12 result in 2007 (43 points).

England only beat Australia by a dodgy touch judge decision last year and Wales are our bunny. I'm with Shasta, I'd back the Wallabies with money to top the group.

I think the Wales game is at Twickenham not Cardiff so the Welsh won't have that advantage at least!

Correct about the location of the game vs Wales, it's at Twickenham and not Millennium Stadium.

Australia have 9 wins and a draw at Millennium from 12 starts so it's a ground that the Wallabies have had a lot of success at.

I actually think this tough group is a blessing in disguise.

Did Wales not have to go through the qualification process once..?

I thought so but apparently not.

Top 12 sides at the 2007 RWC (top 3 in each group) qualified for the 2011 RWC.

We'll need to get our shit sorted out beforehand to make it out of this group. Making it out on top will be a good indicator to the Wallabies that they can and should progress further in the tournament, and that they can win it; rather than the last two RWC outings where they lived in hope of not being found out.

A tough group is a good preparation for Australia, who are the calibre of rugby nation who should go into every RWC with the focus and intent on beating all-comers to win the tournament; New Zealand and South Africa would be thinking the same way.
