ARU sounds out Michael Cheika about Wallabies coaching job

NSW Waratahs chairman Roger Davis says it will be a tragedy for Australian rugby if Wallabies playmaker Kurtley Beale is lost to the game.

A key member of the Waratahs’ Super Rugby championship, Beale is being investigated by the ARU over two incidents involving the Wallabies former business manager Di Patston, who resigned last Saturday.

Beale and Patston clashed on a Wallabies flight from South Africa to South America over attire, while Beale also distributed an offensive text message about Patston back in June.

There is speculation the ARU will terminate Beale’s contract, while the player is also believed to be considering playing in France or switching to rugby league.

“The ARU is conducting a review and we will see what happens, but it would be a a tragedy for Australian rugby to lose Kurtley,” Davis said.

“To lose him would be a major disappointment and a backward step for the code. He has been an extraordinary footballer at schoolboy, Super Rugby and international level.”

Davis also revealed that the Beale affair had interrupted the Waratahs negotiations to extend the contract of head coach Michael Cheika.

“Michael has just returned from a study tour of Argentina and this is a distraction for him,” Davis said.

The is also speculation the ARU has sounded out Cheika about taking over the Wallabies from coach Ewen McKenzie, whose winning percentage will fall below 50 per cent if Australia loses to the All Blacks in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Cheika is a winner. He is a self made millionaire and has a good track record of winning silverware. I think he would be a great national coach. He is a good player manager and develops winning cultures quickly. Link's d1ck got in the way of team performance. I just checked my watch....it's cheika time

Exactly the thing that rugbyWA should have done instead of poaching South africans?
Can't tell me the force recruitment didn't go on scouting trips.

    Not really a big deal.

    *edit*

You of all people should be happy they're looking over there.
Any young kid they pick up wouldn't have to be paid much. So I'm sure they can easily fit a player or two from there under the salary cap. And isn't another existing wallaby going to the tahs.

Calling it a study tour is a load of wank.

And with the amount of money the ARU pours into every corner of NSW, why the hell do they need to go over to the other side of the world "studying" foreign young talent anyway? If they can't come up with the cattle in NSW, they should give that "development" money back and the ARU should distribute it to other parts of Australia instead of paying for Cheika to spend it overseas.

Coaches from the NRL and the AFL go overseas all the time to see how clubs operate.

    It's called professional development.
