Premier can't see future for Patersons Stadium

    DANIEL EMERSON
    The West Australian
    September 17, 2014, 1:39 pm

Colin Barnett says he doesn’t see a future for Patersons Stadium after the new Burswood Stadium is completed, paving the way for possible housing developments on prime real estate.

Mr Barnett this morning stressed no decision had been made on the future of the oval, which would largely be up to football authorities.

“The land is State Government land vested in the Subiaco Council and leased to the WA Football Commission, so that’s up to them to work out those arrangements,” he said.

“I’ve got to say I can’t see a future for Patersons Stadium as it is.

“When the new stadium is completed by 2018 it will be so good and so attractive for major sport and entertainment events and the fans’ experience will be so good I don’t think anyone would want to go to Subiaco, but that’s still three or four years away.”

Asked whether housing developments could be contemplated at the site, Mr Barnett said: “It’s prime real estate but none of those decisions have been looked at.”

I'm curious as to what's the future for all the under-utilised WAFL grounds? Do we really need all the clubs in what is now (unfortunately) a feeder competition, to have their own grounds? Training venues yes, but grounds with grandstands, etc? At the very least, I can see Lathlain Park, Claremont Oval, East Fremantle Oval as surplus to requirements.

    OK, Couple things
1 Nobody WANTS to go to Scumbiaco now, Why would that change?
2 The new stadium won't be attractive for major sport that is played on a rectangular pitch, for exactly the same reasons that Subiaco sucks for them now, Sightlines too far from the action, stands too shallow to get a decent view, (most likely to be) managed by the WAFC and their cronies etc

That land would make a great market development

knock the fucker down and build some epic, ground breaking, architecturally designed, bees-knees apartments. [seriously]

I for one, welcome our new Subiaco development overlords.

Hey Sheikh, they have just approved the closure of the last of the markets in Subi (old Railway Markets) and approval given for massive development on Old Pavilion Markets site. I don't think they want markets anymore

It will be a massive mixed use development like what is being approved along Railway Parade, West Leederville just opposite and Subi Centro to the West.

The sooner it goes the better. Mr North needs some customers

I know they're planning on knocking down the markets - why I made the comment. But I like the markets.

It'll be housing; there's a little park between Subi station and the ground, and Kitchener Park to the east (some of which might go, too) so no need to add more green spaces. Maybe some low density shopping /offices (but it's not like Subi isn't short of that), and I doubt Woolies will want another big mall there.

They should shrink it to the south and east and redevelop it as a rectangular ground. All the facilities (esp. corporate) are there, they'd only need seating.

Well I'd hate to see Lathlain Park go being a Dees fan, and it shits me that East Perth play at West Perth's ground now, but I suppose there's no room for sentimentality, despite me being an old WAFL guy. But hey, I can't change the past, those grounds take up a lot of real estate, and I think they should go before the WACA does.
