Sydney vies for leg of rugby's world sevens series

Allianz Stadium and the SCG Trust are close to pulling off a big coup by luring Australia's leg of the sevens world series to Sydney next year.

Held on the Gold Coast every October or November, a new round of global bidding for the 2015-16 world series has led to Sydney and Melbourne throwing their hats in the ring.

The Breakdown understands Sydney is the favoured destination and Allianz Stadium is in the box seat with a proposal for a sevens festival in the well-appointed Moore Park precinct.

Crowds on the Gold Coast haven't exactly supported the event

Good move if it happens I reckon - I'd consider flying over.

Not a bad idea actually. But the old event had the attraction of being at the old Adelaide Oval, one wonders if the new Adelaide Oval is too large and "big-stadium-ish" to hold this event now?

Wouldn't mind something like this being held here. Nib is okay. Even the grassy hills at the WACA maybe? The sightlines there are nowhere near as bad as Subi.

Would Ballymore support this event? North Sydney Oval?

NIB would be perfect. Really close to the field, tight atmosphere.
Doesn't need a million people to fill and good before and after meeting spots nearby!!

Also someone from everywhere living here!!
Why is Perth not jumping at this?

How much does NIB charge to hire itself up?
It must be the cost of the self important security...

I used to write letters to rugbyWA about this back in the 90's, they always used to say that hosting the tournament "wasn't in future plans"

It was a shame, because back then Perry Lakes and the Burswood Dome were also options to host the event.

Well that's just it, none of these other 'options' are options if they're not bidding to host it.

Was over in London in May this year and managed to make it to Twickenham for the finals on the Sunday... Atmosphere was absolutely amazing with a fun carnival vibe. No one was taking it too seriously (luckily for us when we showed the poms up in the semis) with a bit of banter back and forth. Was just too bad the kiwis ran riot against us in the final!

It's going to be interesting to see what it's like on the GC as we are heading over for the week to see the 7s and then the 3rd Bledisloe. I'm really hoping that the crowd really gets into it but I have a sneaking suspicion that it won't be embraced anywhere as much unfortunately...

Are Adelaide bidding for it? I assume they are not.

THE no-show from apathetic Gold Coast sports fans has killed another sport with Australia’s marquee rugby sevens tournament to be reinvented in Sydney.

The rows of empty seats at the recent Gold Coast Sevens were the tipping point to end the four-year gamble to establish the event outside a major city.

The poor crowd figure of 20,546 across two sunny days this month looked inflated and still represented only 36 per cent of capacity at Robina’s Cbus Super Stadium.

A rugby party of fun, frivolous fancy dress in the stands and fast-paced action had seemed a perfect fit for the Gold Coast to join Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Dubai as a rollicking destination for sevens.

Those who did show up in ballet dresses, Ninja Turtle bandannas and banana suits had a ball with high jinks in the stands and try-jinks on the field.

Unfortunately, too few did and the Gold Coast malaise which has chopped down basketball, football and rugby league clubs has another victim.

The tournament underperformed and this month’s total crowd turnout actually dropped by more than 10,000 on the 2012 figure.

It made it hard to justify paying the rising price tag on hosting one of the nine legs of the Sevens World Series which must have been a key consideration for major backers, Tourism and Events Queensland.

The Australian Rugby Union still bid for rights to host a tournament next year, a crucial piece in building interest for the debut of sevens at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The tournament will be rebranded for Sydney where the buzzing precinct around Allianz Stadium will build the mood in a way that Robina’s sterile surrounds never could.

If Sydney catches sevens fever, all the ingredients are there for a boisterous 40,000-strong rugby festival to rival the sellout days of New Zealand’s famous sevens party in Wellington.

It is the perfect time to try after Adelaide, for five years, and Gold Coast had their crack.

In the afterglow to the NSW Waratahs title triumph in Super Rugby, fans may just jump on sevens where the short-form game is as entertaining off the field as on.

Captain Ed Jenkins and his Australian side have their next sevens tournament hitout in Dubai on December 5-6.
