Wallabies name Stephen Moore as captain for Test series against France

The Wallabies have confirmed Stephen Moore as captain for the three-Test series against France.

Moore replaces Ben Mowen as national rugby captain, after making 91 caps since his debut against Samoa in 2005.

Waratahs flanker Michael Hooper and team-mate Adam Ashley-Cooper have been named as the team's vice-captains.

In a Wallabies statement, coach Ewen McKenzie said the three players would be responsible for driving the team on and off the field.

"They've all been recognised for the contributions they make to the Wallabies environment and I’m confident they possess the right leadership attributes to take this team to the next level," McKenzie said.

"It's a new group of leaders with a variety of personalities and experiences, where in combination they are empowered to help set a new direction towards the Rugby World Cup in 2015.

He has been in and around the leadership setup at a provincial and national level for a long time and as a result has experienced and seen almost every possible sporting leadership scenario.
Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie on Stephen Moore

"For Stephen, I want to congratulate him on what is a huge personal achievement in being chosen to lead your country.

"He has been in and around the leadership setup at a provincial and national level for a long time and as a result has experienced and seen almost every possible sporting leadership scenario.

"He won't be fazed by the challenge of captaincy.

"He understands what works well and why, and I think the added responsibility will suit him and the direction we are taking the team."

Link is reinforcing a "no dickheads" policy with this choice. If Hodgo was his age and in the same form as he is presently, he'd have been the logical choice for the same reasons.

Moore is a good fit as Wallaby captain. He has 90 plus caps, so has the experience and the respect of peers. He is dependable and playing well and I have no doubt that he would pull on anyone who strays from the ethos that Link has set.
