    Mid season 1st grade review

So the end of the first round has been completed and Cott look to be the only one that will be playing finals with the other 3 teams being anyone's guess.
COTT-Will play finals with a squad that will have one at most local junior in it ,much easier to just buy players in. Will win minor premiership but will get rolled come finals time because we all know where they are vunerable.
NEDDIES-Mid season blues ,new coaches and little depth but will have enough class to tough it out and will make it.Senior players need to get to training because it's pissing off the younger guy's.
WESTS-Set piece is a work in progress but have class in the backs that can rip any team to shreds. Best set of loosies in comp. Most professionally managed team in the world. Will make it just.
UNI-Will be awaiting the return of Scobles and Burto from u/20's along with Van Dykes, add in best 6 in the comp Cian O'Connor and will be big threat
KALA-Have flown in 2 more recruits and have spent up large with a formidable pack but will struggle on the outsides where everyone will target. Have pissed off a lot of local loyal players who are now playing league. Will be close
SOAKS-You don't know what you get from one week to the next with Soaks. Will hit form but dropping first five games will come back to haunt them. Will just miss out.
PALY-Their heart and soul has been ripped out by the unfortunate loss of Joe Savage. The impact of the man is not to be underestimated and several of their big guns have failed to fire. Will be looking to blood several U/19's for the future from that team who will be unbeaten this season. Won't make it so Wests can fire in their Force lads come finals time this season with no guilty feeling's.
BAYSIE-Any team with Brent Murphy in it is not to be taken lightly. Solid pack with a lot of youth in the backs. Will cause a few upsets but started too slow this season. Not to be taken lightly but won't make it. Possibly needed one more big ball carrying forward in the Josh Beer mould.
WANNEROO-Long season. Hope they stick with their mission statement. Contrary to rumours floating around they will be playing 1st grade for a long time because the comradery that exists between clubs won't allow anything but that to happen.

Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.

Buck I am trying to drum up some kind of interest on the local scene but I think I'm wasting my time. Total lack of passion for some reason. Am over trying to flush out regular posters, can't even get a bite.
Used to really look forward to getting home from work and reading the latest goss. Will now give it a miss.

    Very good read.
Baysie is putting in a lot of good, hard yards both on and off the field.
Will be a big day this coming Sat with Baysie hosting Cott at the Pat o'Hara reserve, Morley with a 4th grade event.
    Shenanigans for sure!!

Interesting! Have a source at Kala that tells me they have a huge sponsorship deal with Air NZ, because along with the 2 new recruits another 2 have arrived this weekend including their big 2013 no.8. Only one defector to league so far 2nd grade fly half to South Perth.

Good summary Westie , don't have any gossip for you though i am afraid . Uni will struggle during this middle part of the season , wests were all over them last weekend with no go forward the backs were going nowhere . Joondalup stringing some good wins together in Reserve grade at the moment if they can get another 3-5 good quality players they will compete next season . Wanneroo should be bringing out all stops to hang onto their youth to build for next season .

Good summary Westie - shame that there aren't more people with the passion for the local comp as you
One thing I have picked up this year is there is a 'changing of the guard' with regard to the referees as younger refs such as Alex Ninkov, Pat Davies, Liam O'Shea are getting more appointments seemingly at the expense of older heads such as John Hill
Would be interesting to hear what someone in Westies role make of this change - is it having an effect on the game?

Would be no different to blooding a young player. You give him an opportunity and hope that the mistakes that he would inevitably make wouldn't have a huge bearing on the final result. Have to gain experience sometime somehow. I don't think the Refs Ass would fire in a young guy if the result was the difference between playing finals or not, be the same as a young colt player.

i prefer the young guys reffing 1st grade , going with the old group isn't progress , have the john hills , Rob Kellam 's of the comp reffing the 19's or the reserve grade and then helping the younger refs out is a good plan . all three of those young blokes are godo refs , Callum Stewart you could add to that list as well and then you have Graham Cooper as well .

Our issue is that we have a good 'batch' of young refs (Exc the ones who have already made the step to Prems) at the moment who are all easily Reserve grade referees, and have had all the right mentorship and coaching to allow them to proceed to a better game.

Our problem is that we only have 4 premier grade games a week now, with an established panel of about 8 refs (inc the old heads who are still there) and the young guys who are knocking on the door, it's hard to give everyone an opportunity.

For club guys, imagine having two teams packed of players that are all 1st team players, you rotate as much as possible, and they are all loyal (because there is no other club in sight too), but there is a real disadvantage in our referees development with the reduction of top rugby in the state this season. of that I am sure.

And behind the new guys, there are another 4 or 5 waiting to get their Premier Grade debuts too, some who need a bit more work, but really are not that far away.

Existing 9 Premier clubs, Joondalup, Arks/Curtin called whatever and Rocky/Mandurah called Peel. Twelve teams=6 refs. Everyone's happy, play each other once =11 games, go to top six bottom six=5 games, total 16 games then 1 plays 4,2 plays 3 sudden death then grand final . Why couldn't it work.
