A second concussion this season is keeping captain Kieran Read on the sideline for longer than the Crusaders had hoped.

Last year's world player of the year, Read has been ruled out of the heavyweight Super Rugby game against the ACT Brumbies in Christchurch on Saturday.

The athletic No.8 suffered a head knock against the Chiefs two weeks ago which forced him from the field.

It was hoped last weekend's bye round would give him time to recover but Crusaders team doctor Deb Robinson deemed the 28-year-old requires at least another week to prove he is ready.

Read also suffered concussion against the Hurricanes five weeks ago and missed the subsequent match.

The Crusaders team to face the Brumbies is named on Thursday and is expected to include All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, who has missed nearly two months of action with a thumb injury.
