I noticed that the QRU made a 22k profit. I wonder if that was dependent on getting an advance from the RA. If that is the case expect another big loss as Ballymore will further depreciate and their membership numbers are shite for this year.

Part of Queensland's trouble is that they play at Suncorp, which they know they can't fill. They averaged just over 15,000 last year, in a stadium which can hold 52,000. Even if they only open the lower tiers, that's still 25,000, so it's only 60% full. Tickets will always be available on game day, and usually at knock-down prices because the stadium is already paid for and the stewards booked.

If they went back to playing (some) games at Ballymore (capacity 18,000) they'd have a packed stadium which would help the team, and reduced ground rents which would help the finances. Also, once some fans find they can't be sure of rocking up and getting a ticket, their memberships might go up, too.

Don't know how it works at Suncorp but in Sydney the stadium operators pay incentives to some clubs to play games at ANZ rather than their suburban grounds. Even though the supporters don't like it and it's a bad look on TV when poorly performing teams are on the card. Obviously the Broncos don't need incentives but I suspect the Reds might.

    Never read this before

The VRU bid was supported by a letter from the Victorian sports minister James Merlino who pointedly reminded the ARU it previously had indicated to Victoria in a letter in December 2005 that if there was to be a future expansion of Super rugby, it would negotiate exclusively with Melbourne.

I pointed it out in an email to the QRU stating that you got it right by filling memberships and the stadium then go back to what you do worst at politics.

I remember that. Should have been nipped straight in the bud.

    - Not enough money and players in Australia at the time to support it
    - The RA was losing money and cutting the pathways
    - Let SA have their sixth side and f..k it up. O'Neill was willing to send the Force to the SA conference as one of his back up plans if the Rabble didn't get in ahead of the Kings

But VRU chairman Gary Gray said last night a structure would be set up that would be flexible enough to take advantage of all future funding options.
    Onya Gary, you c..t.

I like this quote from Papa Papworth:

“Can you imagine the population of western Sydney in 20 years and there's no (Super) rugby team. It makes no sense to us," Papworth said.

Right back at you Papworth, only with the word “Sydney” replaced by the word “Australia”!! What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!!

Actually, I quite enjoyed Ballymore when I went to a couple of NRC matches there back in 2015. It's not got much in the way of facilities, and if there had been 18,000 there the beer queue would have been horrendous, but for a crowd of ~3,000 it was a cool little ground. Can't believe it hosted a World Cup semi-final, though, and the transport links are a bit basic.

There's your issue right there - aging facilities and inconvenient location. The odd 'special event' game might work but probably not as a regular venue.

    Ah, but you see:
    a) I said I think it would work well if the Reds used it as a base for some games, as it might scare some Queenslanders who feel that they do not need a membership to support their club more, and
    b) I'd not be going, so the aging facilities and poor transport links wouldn't affect me!

Whether they got a loan or not is independent on whether they made a profit. A loan is not income. It's great news for qld to have not been in the red this year, hopefully it means they are turning around their shitty mgmt but some other decisions they've made indicate the opposite...
