Australia must make fast start in 'Pool of Death' at Gold Coast Sevens

AUSTRALIA skipper Ed Jenkins is demanding a fast Saturday start at the Gold Coast Sevens try-fest to avoid a "Pool of Death" wipeout at Skilled Park.

Traditionally, top nations can enjoy a first-day frolic against a minnow to shake off the rust but the home nation has no such luxury.

Scotland (1.04pm), Argentina (4.20pm) and sevens powerhouse Samoa (7.46pm) are queued up as Pool D rivals to upset the Aussies.

A slip-up against the unpredictable Scots or Argentinians would leave Jenkins's outfit having to beat the Samoans just to stay alive in Sunday's Cup competition.

No team wants that pressure because only the top two sides go through from each pool.

"Back a few years, you'd be able to red-pen a few sides in your pool and almost guarantee a path straight into the Cup quarter-finals, but these days it's almost impossible to do that,” Jenkins said.

"There's a Pool of Death every tournament. Nothing's easy which is the way sevens has gone with the sport now in the Olympics for 2016.

"We have three tough games first up."

Well done to the Wallabies Sevens who managed to top the "Pool of Death" and were well beaten by a pretty impressive Kiwi outfit.

I think the best way 7's can be improved in Australia is by taking that f#*king oxygen thief Greg Martin off the commentary team, he ruined some really good plays with his dribble. Silence would have been better than his carry on.

It was a tough final they got off to a 12 - 0 lead with Stannard scoring his first try of the comp.

But they ran out of Puff after they played the Semi against SA which went into extra time where they played an extra 13 mins almost a full second game and lost 2 players for the final which proved a bridge to far to then come up against the Kiwis who only had 1 try scored against them in the 2 days so the Boys corssing the Line 3 times was a great effort.

The 7s is possibly Moving away from the Gold Coast - as has been discussed today.

I know the SA Rugby guys have been watching the "relocation" comments with a great deal of interest.

looked a pretty poor turn out on the Gold Coast.
Adelaide seemed to have a full house if I remember correctly.
I wonder how sevens would do here. Must say I would go.

Adelaide got good crowds but not full houses. As for Perth I think we need to start turning up at test matches first!

I'd say Ballymore but I'm not sure the facilities are up to international standard nowadays.

no we don't, it is called voting with your feet - if filling out nib for high profile super 15 games and having a mostly empty subi for a wallaby test match doesn't make the point - what will ?

That hasn't happened for a while either - unless you count the Rabbitohs-Warriors game.

They definitely aren't - went there for the combined services game prior to the first Lions test in June.

No we got 21-22 000 people for the regular season Crusaders game a couple of years back (when Israel Dagg terrorised us). Still the ground record despite what Nine's NRL commentators would have you believe.
