Force look to go west again

    Nick Taylor,
    The West Australian
    August 20, 2013, 10:09 am

Western Force are looking at recruiting two more young South African players for next season.

They are in talks with full-back/fly-half Dillyn Leyds and prop Francois van Wyk, both from Western Province.

The Force have been on a heavy recruiting campaign in South Africa since they were given permission by the Australian Rugby Union to have two international marquee signings and six overseas development players in their squad from next season.

They have already signed centre Marcel Brache and prop Chris Heiberg as development players and second-rower Wilhelm Steenkamp as a marquee star.

Leyds, 20, is a "Baby Bok" who played in the winning South African side at the Junior World Cup last year.

He and prop van Wyk, 22, are both in the Western Province Vodacom Cup squad.

Force chief executive Mark Sinderberry said overseas recruitment was just one option for the Super Rugby club that is likely to need an expanded squad with the introduction next year of the third tier competition.

“We’re still very active in our recruitment for the 2014 Super Rugby season,” Sinderberry said.

“We’re looking at a number of options for next year’s squad, including the promotion of Perth-based players from within our local development pathways and providing opportunities for talented players outside of the traditional east coast player pool.

“Michael Foley and his coaching and management staff are already implementing a rugby programme that has an intense focus on the on and off-field development of our players.

“This will help establish the Emirates Western Force as a club of choice for prospective players and hold us in excellent stead for future recruitment beyond the 2014 season.”

Yes yes, all the usual criticisms will be levelled at this idea, but there is one sentence I really like out of that story.

It's not like we've got a great percentage with the traditional recruiting setup!

There is a cracking South African shop in Willetton next door or right next door but one to a massage parlour

Before anyone starts I haven't frequented either establishment!

I am glad we have the " Western" in the name already! We might have to add " Province "or " Stormers"?

Why? We are amost 10,000 km East of Cape Province.
Even if you take the extreme view, The only places further west are Madagascar and the Eastern Cape.

I've said it before, when the Super 18 comes along, we should be in the SA/Argie pool instead!

I really like the idea of recruiting from South Africa. If astutely done, we could end up with some absolute gems. I think it would do a really good job of getting more ex pat South Africans along to Force games. I know I'd be more keen to follow UK/French club if they had a couple of WA players playing for them.

It makes me wonder though- are these EPS spots of full squad? If they are EPS spots, does that mean that Ollie Hoskins will miss out? If not, does recruiting a guy like Dillyn Leyds (don't get me started on the spelling of his name) mean the Force have decided against James O'Connor? Michael Foley's season review interview seemed suggestive on that.
