A top rugby player has died in hospital after he collapsed following a game on Saturday.

Takapuna Rugby Club player Willie Halaifonua, 27, fell unconscious on his way back to the changing rooms after a premier match against Massey at the Onewa club grounds.

He was rushed to Auckland Hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery before being placed in an induced coma.

The Tongan father of two young children died late last night surrounded by his wife and other family members.

Mr Halaifonua played lock for his club side and was announced player of the day just moments before he collapsed.

Team management reported that he had suffered a number of knocks during the game, but did not appear to have suffered a concussion.

Takapuna Rugby Club players and officials held vigil at Auckland Hospital in the days following his collapse.

Family, friends and team mates have shared their grief on social media with many remembering Mr Halaifonua as a gifted, yet humble sportsman and a loving father.

I think this shows that players who are concussed during the game should come off and take no further part in the match. I'm not sure what the current "concussion bin " tests involve , but they seem a bit of joke, looking back at the lions games (George Smith in particular comes to mind)

    Very sad indeed.

Agree with you Terry - the IRB's concussion 'rules' are shameful. No wonder that Irish doctor resigned from the medical board.

This is very sad but it has nothing to do with the IRB's concussion rules, which only apply at elite levels, not the level this poor man played at.

The IRB encourage all referees & coaches to familiarise themselves with the pocket SCAT2 document in order to be able to recognise, and take the necessary action if a player is suspected of having concussion.

Concussion doesn't just show up as a player being off balance or dizzy, there can be other symptoms.

For those interested in knowing visit the irbplayerwelfar.com and take the concussion management module that is for where a medical practitioner is not present.

How very sad for his family, friends and the whole Rugby community... May he enjoy the game played by gentlemen in heaven!
