With Browny gone, Captain Matt Hodgson remains the only player from our Inaugural match against the Brumbies that is still playing with us. And him and Digby remain the only two still playing Super Rugby.

Flanker Richard Brown set to leave Western Force for Japanese club Honda
    DALE GRANGER PERTHNOW JULY 11, 2013 12:54PM
    \

DEPARTING Western Force flanker and foundation member Richard Brown says prodigal son James O'Connor could only make a successful return to Perth if he was prepared to buy into the club's new ethos.

Brown, 28, has signed a two-year deal with Japanese club Honda and will be joining former Force teammates Cameron Shepherd and Haig Sare - now a coach at the Suzuka-based club - along with compatriot Sam Harris.

Brown's departure after a final farewell against the Brumbies in the Force's final Super Rugby game of the season at nib Stadium on Saturday night leaves captain Matt Hodgson and another Wallaby, prop Pek Cowan, as the sole remaining foundation members left at the club from its inaugural season in 2006.

Brown said he was leaving with fond memories and hoped to one day return to Perth, but after eight years he saw the need to open a new chapter in his career to avoid becoming stale.

As Brown rides into the sunset, the rugby grapevine is buzzing with speculation that former Perth pin-up James O'Connor, out of contract with the Rebels two years after leaving Perth, could return to the Force, albeit tentatively as new club chief executive Mark Sinderberry revealed there would be strings attached to any potential deal.

“I think the club has evolved from when he was here,” Brown said of his former teammate and the emerging culture at the Force.

“He has evolved and the club is not what it was. He could still be valuable to the Force. But he would have to fit in and that would mean toeing the line.”

Brown said the club was in the process of establishing an “all for one and one for all culture” moving forward.

“Eight years ago I came here, along with a lot of other boys, not knowing what to expect. Today I can reflect on an incredible period of my life in a city, Perth, that has become home to me,” the former Queenslander said.

Brown had no hesitation in saying his fondest moments at the Force were “the wonderful people and great players who made this club so special”, highlighting a run of 88 games for the club dating back to their first-ever battle against the Brumbies in 2006.

The 25-capped Wallaby also, however, said the low points were the club's under-achievements.

“With the talent and people we had at our disposal, it was a disappointment to me that we didn't have more success or even win the title,” he said.
