Veteran flanker George Smith could be the biggest winner from David Pocock's injury setback.

Smith marked his return to Super Rugby with the Brumbies in Saturday's thumping win over the Waratahs.

However with Pocock suffering a season-ending knee injury in the same match, Smith now has the chance to stake a claim for an international recall.

Michael Hooper and Liam Gill are the favourites to battle it out for the No 7 jersey for the forthcoming series against the British and Irish Lions, however Smith's experience could be vital.

The 32-year-old won 110 caps during a distinguished career and although his last appearances for the Wallabies came in 2009 - with Smith going on to ply his trade in France and Japan - Australia coach Robbie Deans has refused to rule out a recall.

Remarkable

"We'll cross those bridges, obviously he's not eligible so it's not part of our consideration for now," Deans told the Canberra Times.

"There's an awful lot of footy to go before we get to that so we'll just leave it there for now.

"George was George. He's a remarkable rugby player, incredibly resilient in terms of his longevity, but he performs as well.

"He didn't bat an eyelid, he entered the game and he just did what he's always done. It was great for all parties to have him back."
