    Lighter load for rising star

Hope we see more of Paddy this year.

Western Force back Paddy Dellit is hoping to put a frustrating 2012 behind him and reclaim a regular spot in the starting line-up.

Dellit, who plays full-back or outside centre, managed only three starts in the No.13 jumper and two appearances from the bench after a groin injury.

It was a tough blow after an impressive debut season in 2011 with nine starts, five in the No.15 jumper and four at centre, and three appearances from the bench. He went on to win the club's rising star award.

"Last year was disappointing," Dellit said.

"It was basically the load. This year I've got on top of it.

"This year it's a much more tailored and managed pre- season. Rather than doing everything we are being looked after a bit better, managed better."

Competition for positions will be fierce under coach Michael Foley, who has introduced plenty of new faces while regarding Dellit as a full-back option.

"When Paddy was recruited from Easts he was a very effective full-back in Sydney club competition," Foley said.

"Since his arrival here he's played mostly 13 but we're very fortunate to have a number of backs that are versatile, can play more than one position.

    "Paddy's one of those guys."

Dellit, 26, who is in the last year of his contract, will be happy in either position.

"We'll see what happens. There will be different combinations with the new back line and people will be working in different spots and trying new positions," he said.

"It's good to have healthy competition. The more we push each other the more beneficial it will be for the team."

He said the huge overhaul had the club in better shape.

"There's a really good culture building within the team," Dellit said. "It was tough last year.

"We lost our coach and there were a lot of guys going, there were a lot of clouds hanging over players whether they were staying or going.

"Because it is a big change the guys that have been here are trying to revamp themselves, the new guys are looking to claim their spot in the team."

Force assistant strength and conditioning coach Brendyn Appleby has won the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association's top honour, the Bruce Walsh Award for outstanding work in the industry.

    Nice article.

I like him as a player and hope he comes good this year, as he looked like he could get onto the fringes of a Wallaby spot during his break out first year.

Hope the injury had nothing to with his "partner", Angela Tsun (ex Channel nine weather girl).

She needs to keep him in cotton wool at home.
