Ready to play in their lingerie

It's one of the fastest growing sports leagues in the US.

It has courted controversy from its critics, who claim it belittles and demeans female athletes. Now Lingerie Football is on its way to WA.

More than 50 hopefuls turned out at George Burnett Park in Manning at the weekend for the first try-outs of the yet-to-be-named Perth franchise, set to be part of the Australian Lingerie Football League when it begins in December next year.

Under the supervision of State gridiron coaches, applicants were put through challenges to test their speed, stamina and willingness to get physical.

Personal trainer Tammy West said the physicality appealed to her, having already played lacrosse and ice hockey.

"I love American football - it's something new," she said. "Plus, it's full contact. There aren't that many opportunities for that side of women's sport in Perth."

A squad of 30 will be selected from the try-outs, who will travel to the US for more training.

Launched in the US in 2009, the sport is full contact, with seven players in each side's offensive or defensive line.

While the lingerie uniforms may leave little to the imagination, the shoulder armour, helmets and mouthguards show players are in for heavy hits.

I'm amazed it took this long for someone to post this on the site. There were news stories on it last week!

You all will enjoy the game. It's all about sportsmanship. Here's an example of an Allstar game which means nothing, it's just an exhibition to showcase the best of the best. Including the coaches.

They are ice hockey helmets by the looks - I wouldn't want to be trying out an impact on them...

I am told they were the half time entertainment for the national (mens) gridiron champs, so it's no big stretch

You'd think some marketing guru would have come up with lingerie AFL or rugby for the Australian market.

Someone was. One of the former WAFL league players is/was organising the Perth side of things.
