Australian Soldier Awarded Victoria Cross

Governor-General Quentin Bryce bestowed the honour on Corporal Keighran during a ceremony at Government House in Canberra.

He is the third Australian soldier to be awarded the VC for service in Afghanistan.

The 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment corporal received the award for fending off a Taliban attack during MTF-1 in 2010, which occurred during the Battle of Derapet in southern Afghanistan.

A Defence source said the soldier was believed to have provided fire cover during a firefight with insurgents, allowing his comrades to retreat to safety.

The news conference revealed that he is now a member of the Australian Army Reserve. Currently living and working in Kalgoorlie in a "underground Gold Mine"

Hard to comprehend the level of devotion to his men to have continually carried out the things he did under fire with a fine disregard for his own wellbeing.
Once you can put down to adrenaline or any number of things, but to have continually and deliberately have done those things!
