    Labor promises Subiaco stadium

    Daniel Emerson,

    The West Australian

    September 12, 2012, 3:00 pm

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan says Labor would build WA’s new football stadium at Subiaco if it won the March election, unless Crown Limited “stumped up half a billion dollars” to make Burswood worthwhile.

The Government says throwing the current stadium plan out the window in favour of Subiaco would waste $11.6 million spent this financial year developing the feasibility of Burswood.

It would also add 18 months to the current timeframe of having the new stadium available for the 2018 AFL season.

Premier Colin Barnett said this morning he expected no contracts on the site preparation or construction of the Burswood stadium would have been signed by the March election, meaning Labor would be free to carry out its threat to go back to Subiaco.

“That would be an appalling decision,” Mr Barnett said.

“This stadium is now well advanced, a huge amount of effort has gone in and it will be a world class stadium on a greenfield site. Far better than trying to cram 60,000 seats into Subiaco.”

Mr McGowan said one of the recommendations the 2006 Langoulant taskforce commissioned by the previous Labor Government was to build a new stadium at Kitchener Park in Subiaco adjacent to the current Patersons Stadium.

He said that option, settled upon by former premier Alan Carpenter had been far cheaper than the Burswood option described by the taskforce the least desirable.

“My preference is to have a world class stadium at the most affordable cost to taxpayers at the home of football,” Mr McGowan said.

“A vote for Labor is a vote for a world class stadium that is affordable for taxpayers with whatever can be saved out of it, given back to taxpayers in their pockets.”

Mr McGowan criticised the Government’s decision not to ask Crown Limited, owner of the casino on the Burswood peninsula, for a contribution towards construction since it would be a major beneficiary.

He said a “significant contribution” from Crown, making the Burswood option cheaper than Subiaco, may change his mind.

“If they wanted to stump up the half a billion dollars in extra cost, well that may put a different complexion on the matter,” Mr McGowan said.

Mr McGowan said Labor’s dormant plans for Subiaco were more advanced than the Government’s Burswood plans and would be a cheaper option because there was already good transport links to Subiaco.

But Sports Minister Terry Waldron said all Labor had was the Langoulant taskforce report, whereas the Government had completed a stadium master plan and project definition plan for Burswood.

“The Government has completed 18 months of intensive planning which will ensure the stadium is delivered in time for the 2018 AFL season,” he said.
“This work would have to be replicated if the Opposition made the decision to build the stadium at Subiaco.”

So here we go again, new government new investigation, new plans just in time fothe next election. This why voting should not be compuslory, it just encourages the clowns

    What an option

Hate Barnett for stuffing up Riverside Drive and ignoring a very sick Swan River and now have these pathetic backward thinking tossers in the Labor Party trying to be an alternative. No mining boom in Victoria but they have world class facilities and infra sructure that make us look almost third world.

all well and good but we will never watch a Bledisloe test at NIB, more chance of a game in Hobart at the rate we are going. The progress is slower than using the wonderfully named freeway even on a saturday or sunday afternoon. Dead set time to wake these polies up. Africa and China are almost more switched on.

Well if we had gone the other way we would still be watching the Force at Subi and the construction of retractable seats that would never be retracted well under way.

True Gerry, but I knew that decision was reversed because of a change in government, not because it was in any way sensible.

The confidence I have now is that RugbyWA have seen the sense in viewing our game in the proper environment and will either stay at NIB and require the upgrades for us to fill it or insist on the seats (that will never be moved) being moved.

Since the business model of Kitchener Park only worked if every code played there they will end up pretty desperate for bookings after a couple of years. A SupeRugby team and an NRL team (don't kid yourself, we'll have one of those before it's finished) would equal a lot of revenue, tney might not be in a position to refuse, but a shrewd CEO of rugby would recognize that and write in significant penalties for seats not being moved.

A season of that and the gAyFL will pay for our 50,000 seat rectangular stadium themselves.

Great, they have decided to run the election campaign based upon a frakking football stadium. Lets not concern ourselves with boring stuff like education, health, social inequality, business development, environmental concerns, or god forbid infrastructure for a growing community like water supply, power and gas delivery, public transport.

Nothing to see here, move along

    All I can say is

lol@Labour and lol@politics in this state

    Meanwhile in Canberra.....

Raiders chief executive Don Furner believes a Raiders premiership would fast-track a proposal to build an enclosed stadium in Canberra's CBD by 2017.

Fairfax obtained figures which revealed the Raiders had run their home matches at a loss on six occasions this year.

On a cold and miserable night in the nation's capital back in round 24, the Raiders attracted just 8860 fans for their home game against the Roosters, losing $14,000 because their game day operations cost more than what they earned at the gate.

The ACT government has proposed a $280 million development, which would require $180 million of funding from the federal government, to be built in the heart of the city.

Furner believes a title this season would only add merit to the push from the Raiders, as well as Super Rugby franchise ACT Brumbies, to have the roofed stadium built in the next five years.

''If we win the grand final we'd get even more leverage to push that,'' Furner said. ''I think we're the one city in Australia that deserves an enclosed stadium. The plans are afoot. We've had meetings with the ACT government. The government themselves are very keen on building a closed stadium back in the city.

''I think it would be fantastic for Canberra. It would bring some life back into the city.

Given they were going to go ahead with this riverside development anyway they should have planned a tunnel or something to replace Riverside Drive. Lets just force 35,000 cars a day onto the already congested Graham Farmer Fwy and St Georges Tce that has recently been changed to one lane each way to accomodate new bus lanes
