David Gallop would have been a great boss at RugbyWA

There is good news in this story for Rugby WA. It is almost certain that there will ne no expansion to WA (or anywhere else) during the 5 years duration of this agreement. So no new competition for players/spectators.

The only question that raised for me was broadcasters disinterest in another telecast timeslot from Perth. Where did they get the ratings figures that formed this view? What are the implications for the Force going forward?

Gold Coast and GWS don't rate much better then the TV test pattern and apparently broadcasters were worried that something similar may happen to potential expansion sides. At least that was one version I heard on Ray Hadley's show yesterday morning.

I'm in two minds, very glad Rugby League got a big payday (the $1.05 billion is before the TV rights are sold in NZ) but a bit disappointed that most of the noise indicates there will be no expansion.

NRL deal unprofitable: Seven West chief

Seven West Media chief executive Don Voelte said he ran the numbers on the $1 billion cost of rugby league broadcast rights - won by rival Nine and Fox Sports - and could only come up with a $42 million-a-year loss.
    Peter Trute,
    AAP Senior Finance Writer,
    AAPUpdated August 22, 2012, 2:15 pm

Mr Voelte presented Seven West's 2011/12 results on Wednesday, a day after the Australian Rugby League Commission announced Nine and Fox Sports had trumped bids from the Seven and Ten networks.

Nine and Fox secured the free-to-air and pay TV rights to NRL games for five years for $1.025 billion.

Mr Voelte said he looked at the numbers after Tuesday's announcement and could only come up with a $42 million a year loss for the rights purchase.

"We wanted NRL, but we didn't want it at any cost," Mr Voelte told analysts.

"The big winner in my mind, after taking a look at it, is the NRL - they did very well for themselves."

Mr Voelte said Seven West would be interested in bidding for the rights to cricket, currently held by Nine but up for renewal in 2013.
"We will be interested in looking at all live sports," he said.

You would have to wonder why they are looking at live sports because they mostly only show stuff on delay! I wonder if he actually factored in showing the games live weather his $42 million loss might become profit
