Meehan calls it quits as Forces's attack coach

Steve Meehan has left the Western Force after less than a year as their attack coach. The Breakdown understands the former head coach of English club Bath Rugby was on a one-year deal that ran until October. But with the Force's season done and dusted, and neither party keen to renew the relationship, Meehan and head coach Michael Foley agreed to part ways early. The pair overlapped at Bath, where Foley started his coaching career and spent five years until joining the Wallabies as an assistant in 2006. Meehan joined Bath as attack coach before Foley left, taking on the top job two months later and leading the club to a European Challenge Cup win in his second season there. The Force have parted ways with two assistant coaches this year, losing former Reds and Wallabies prop Nick Stiles to Queensland - where former coach Richard Graham is stationed - in April.

    Pulver on the move
ARU boss Bill Pulver impressed Australia's Super Rugby players with a whistle-stop tour of all five clubs last week. Pulver sat down in person with the Reds, Brumbies, Rebels and Waratahs squads over the course of three days, then spoke to the Force via video conference, discussing the state of the game, the ARU's position on the collective bargaining agreement as well as the union's illicit drugs policies. The in-person meet-and-greet went down a treat with the players, by all accounts.

    New media chief
Pulver has appointed former ABC journalist and current ANZ communications head Rachel Hickey to the role of general manager, media and communications. Hickey will take over from Peter Jenkins, who ran the media and marketing show for former ARU boss John O'Neill. Jenkins will finish early next month after a short overlap with Hickey, who has spent the past two years at ANZ New Zealand and ANZ in Australia after a long stint in corporate public relations. Hickey worked for the ABC from 2000 to 2004, her LinkedIn profile shows.

Which high-profile Sydney footballer with links to New Zealand was spotted enjoying a very convivial dinner with All Blacks coach Steve Hansen at the Neptune Palace restaurant in Circular Quay on Wednesday night? Hint: It wasn't Benji Marshall.

    Few pointers here
    Force ring mentor changes

Western Force have lost a second assistant coach, with backs and attack mentor Steve Meehan leaving after just one season at the Super Rugby club.

Forwards coach Nick Stiles has already gone to Queensland Reds, with former Force hooker Tai McIsaac, coaching in Japan, a favourite to replace him.

It is understood Meehan had been unhappy for some time and was seeking other opportunities.

He joined the Force after five years at English premiership club Bath with a reputation for producing exciting rugby, but the side scored only 26 tries in a disappointing season.

Defence consultant David Wessels, who returned to South Africa some weeks ago, is another who may not be back next season as coach Michael Foley assesses his coaching team.

"As we look towards a new approach with the coaching of our attack next season, Steve Meehan's contract has not been extended," Foley said.

That's a bit of a long bow there Pete, Meehan was our attack coach in a season where our attack was atrocious........it's fairly typical for a coach's head to roll in that situation and Meehan was an easy target.

As long as the next bloke can get results I'm OK with it!

Force players have begun a new two-month post-season program, testing areas such as speed, strength, upper and lower body power, and improving the ability to change direction.

Head of athletic performance David Joyce said a physical base for each player was needed before individual programs could be produced.

"Playing rugby is not just bench pressing and squatting," Joyce said.

"It's about how well you can generate and absorb force and how you can minimise energy when you're moving."

Twenty-two Force Super squad players will be involved in local club rugby tomorrow.

Four will play while the rest will be involved in coaching and analysis. More are expected to play in coming weeks.

Foley said committing to local clubs was an integral part of growing rugby.

"We've had a number of clubs and players assist us throughout the Super Rugby season and this is our opportunity to return the favour through our commitment to the local competition," he said.

·Centre Ben Jacobs, 31, said yesterday said he was leaving the Force to rejoin London Wasps.

I think a bit of perspective is needed.
The loss of a coach, or coaching staff doesnt instantly suggest we dont have the ability to retain staff.
