We are thrilled to have him for the next 12 years!

He actually left about $30 million on the table to stay in Pittsburgh and play for Mario and the Pens. Any of the other teams would have signed him for the maximum contract allowed. About $12million a year. He signed for $8.7 a year. He took less so they have $$ under the cap to sign some other top players in FA. He is also superstitious. Born on 8/7/87 wears number 87 and plays for $8.7 a year.

What a champ! What numerology. 87 is, of course, 13 shy of a ton. Go Penguins!

That's still a $104.4 million contract. I think I could find a little loyalty for that kinda money.

Looks like he has decided that too much money is enough! What an incredible bloke. Usually when one reads about elite athletes earnings its in the reverse order of Sid's.

He's doing it tough, no doubt. Burger King coupons, maybe?

In all seriousness though. It's a pretty good deal. He has a set income until presumably he retires. And the last few seasons the decrease will like larry said, help recruit new players when he is no longer on top of his game and at the end of his career

That looks either like he thinks he'll retire in 2022 (when he'll be 35), or he'll renegotiate his contract, if he wants to keep playing. Then again, getting paid $3 million a year to keep the pine warm isn't a bad gig.

I've no probem with a player getting such a contract. The money isn't guaranteed - if he gets a career ending injury in the first game next season he gets the signing bonus, one game payday and a year's salary on injured reserve (which, unless it's stipulated in his contract, IIRC is a flat rate for everyone in the league). And as a big name player who's just signed a contract, he'll have every enforcer in the league after him.
