If the rabble win tonight, the brumbies can afford to 'throw the game' tomorrow for a force win. Won't affect top of oz conference.

Injury-hit Force run out of players

The injury-battered Western Force have been forced to pull two players with no Super Rugby experience out of club rugby and into their squad for tonight's clash with the Brumbies at nib Stadium.

The move exposes the Force's lack of reserve depth which has become a big problem since the Australian Rugby Union slashed its $200,000 support for their senior academy last year.

The Force have run out of tighthead props and second-rowers. They have used 33 players this year - all those that have been available in their main squad and their five extended-squad players.

Rookie pair Ruan Smith, 22, a prop from the GPS club in Brisbane who toured with the Force to Samoa last year, and second row Ollie Atkins, 24, from Sydney University, flew to Perth yesterday. They will sit on the bench after Wallaby front-rower Salesi Ma'afu broke an arm at training on Thursday and Phoenix Battye was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

They will have little time to learn the Force game plane and the all-important line-out calls and set-piece plays.

The Force battled to save their academy but were ignored by the ARU, which now funds only two centres, in Sydney and Brisbane.

Force chief executive Vern Reid said the situation highlighted the difficulty faced by the club.

"If ever there was a demonstration that things need to be different then here it is," he said. "It reinforces our need for a senior academy and an extended player group that is ready for Super Rugby."

The Force were already facing a battle against the Brumbies, five-point leaders at the top of the Australian Super conference, before the injuries. They will now play on a wave of emotion as they farewell former captain and foundation player Nathan Sharpe in his last home game.

Captain David Pocock, a Brumbies recruiting target, said winning Sharpe's last game in Perth was extra incentive. "He's a special part of the group. The boys will put it in for him," he said.

Pocock will make a decision on his future at the end of the season once the new Force coach is appointed. Interviews for the job have been taking place this week.

"I'm happy for the interview process to go forward and the board to appoint the best person for the job and after the season have a little time to think about it and make a decision," Pocock said.

Brumbies coach Jake White has had discussions with Pocock but a spokesman said there would be no talks while the ACT-based side was in Perth.

However, hooker Stephen Moore said the club was trying to lure Pocock to the nation's capital.

He said there was no secret in their interest, particularly since losing flanker Michael Hooper to the Waratahs.
"The club has put something to him to let him know we'd love to have him at the Brumbies. Canberra would be a good place for him to further his rugby," Moore said.

    2 things.

we'll really struggle in the set piece now.

and Moore: go f**k yourself, you still play for the poines, where pocock's development wouldn't have been anywhere near the level it is today if he came to you guys as a 17 year old.

This really pisses me off!!!!! Why the f#@$ bring iver 2 nobodys from over east wheb we have 2 development players right here in perth who have trained with the force all year. Blake is just as
bad a RG. Give Jake Ball and Ollie Hoskins a go ffs they will do as good a job as anyons from over east! This shit has got to stop why even bother with developing local kids if you wont give them a go. There are 3 games left ffs why not give Godwin a real go and see what hes got...but no we are playing a washed up 10 from sydney off the bench and who do the ponys have at 10...thats right a perth boy!
