So What happened at the Margaret River Sevens?

Does anyone have any results? Player of the tournament? New talent spotted?

RugbyWA’s Bank West Academy and Wanneroo’s women’s team have taken top billing at the inaugural Margaret River Sevens tournament over the weekend.

The latest innovation from RugbyWA’s Community Department saw 15 men’s and four women’s teams from across Western Australia congregate in the South West town for some action packed rugby on the field as well as plenty of fun and camaraderie off it as well.

Andrew Hill, Manager of Community Rugby at RugbyWA, said it was a great start to what is intended to become an annual event.

“There were some amazing skills shown across all the games keeping the crowds entertained and the players on their toes,” said Hill.

“We were really pleased that the nominated teams travelled down to Margaret River and from the reaction of both the players and spectators, the tournament was well received, and we’re confident it will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.”

There was an added incentive for the women taking part in the tournament with the Margaret River Sevens doubling as selection trials for the WA Women’s State team that will compete at the national competition in April this year.

Wanneroo went through undefeated in their three matches however were made to work for their victories, especially by Cottesloe.

In the men’s division Associates finished a credible third, while Palmyra Fresh was runners-up behind the Bankwest Academy.

“We were well looked after by the Margaret River Groupers RUFC and the event wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of the Australian Rugby Union and the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation,” Hill said.

good starting point for a local 7s comp. would of been nice for more games for sides not in the top 8 like most 7s comps. with a bit more publicity has potential to grow
