Here's what I don't get:

The carbon tax is to encourage business to either pay more tax or invest in "green technology" (basically), right?

So, if they simply choose to pay more tax (and to heck with the planet), then we just end up paying more because they will pass that tax onto the consumer, right? (except Brumby's....)

So what's the incentive for them NOT to charge the consumer?

And how does this reduce carbon emissions?

Also, isn't the job of opposition to be negative?

If you want to see Mr Negative, Paul Papalia in the local show does a pretty damn good version!

Definitely not. They are there to hold the government to account, to debate issues and suggest amendments where they disagree with some elements of proposed bills, oppose legislation they fundamentally disagree with but not blindly oppose those they don't.

That's been they way in the past mostly. The fact is, despite all their bleatings, most of the opposition are NOT fundamentally opposed to the two issues getting most attention ATM but Abbott has demanded that they play the spoiler on everything. That means they will have painted themselves into a corner when they get to government by giving cast iron guarantees to undo legislation. Will lead to bad policy.
