Force return to training as Ma'fu hits Perth

Article Published: Wednesday 4 January 2012

Western Force players returned to training following their Christmas break and welcomed a new addition to the squad with Wallabies front rower Salesi Ma'afu joining pre-season preparations in Perth.

Ma'afu went into the programme refreshed after featuring in Australia's World Cup campaign in New Zealand and was the starting tighthead against Wales in Cardiff on December 3 as the Wallabies completed their 2011 international season on a high.

The 125kg powerhouse has headed to Western Australia following 52 Super Rugby caps with the Brumbies and adds further experience and class to an impressive forward pack assembled at the Western Force.

Unnamed Sauces have communicated that one Pek Cowan has been training the absolute house down (extra sessions etc) and is doing what ever it takes to ensure he gets a Gold jumper from Robbie this year and in future years......Go Pekka

Good candidate for Man. He signed for 3 years last season- you don't see many 3 year deals anymore.

I might get howled down here, but I though Ma'afu looked pretty promising in the Wales game. Scrumming against true quality, Northern opposition he did a good job and held up his side well, as for around the park....sure it could have improved, but he was hardly absent. Drop some of the evidence of easy living and replace it with the evidence of hard work, along with a bit of cardio and that'll pick up

I thought Ma'afu was shitty when he started with the Wallabies. But he formed a front row with Saia Faingaa and Ben Daley in his earlier tests and they were scrumming against England. Faingaa and Daley struggle in scrums in the S15 so it was perhaps a bit of a harsh call. Ma'afu did look good against Wales twice and the Barbarians. We'll probably need his bulk in the pick and drives too.

Have to say I agree with every breath of that post James, particularly about the pick and drives....I suspect we'll be a 'workmanlike' team this year, nothing fancy, no bullshit "give it to me" inside backs to stuff around with the good work, just plain old hard work, resulting in reasonable gains which won't be squandered by a group that honor the work of their teammates.

    Should be fantastic to watch!

What's going to be good is that we are finally starting to get depth in our squad especially our pack should make our starters to play better and our last "quarter" fade out will hopefully diminish

Let's hope our starters stay healthy for the season though

I think Maafu is better then the props in Perth currently, just depends on whether Graham can keep his fitness in check throughout the season..
