    Pocock understudy required

THE depth of David Pocock's influence on the Wallabies' performance was captured comprehensively during his absence against Ireland, and presence against South Africa, during the World Cup.
And with the busiest schedule in history facing the Australian players next year, it is of utmost importance that a clear back-up for Pocock emerges.

Confusion surrounds the preferred choice, and this uncertainty bodes well for generation next.

Michael Hooper, who won this year's John Eales medal as under-20s player of the year, could be the man.

"In regards to the Australian back-up No.7 position, everybody knows it is not set in stone," said Hooper, who is in pre-season training with Brumbies teammates.

Matt Hodgson, who is Pocock's deputy on their UK tour, was left out of the World Cup squad altogether and only got a late call-up after Wycliff Palu's injury. He didn't play and the original omission raises questions over his long-term prospects.

Ben McCalman was forced to shoulder the burden of the unfamiliar position early in the World Cup and the move was exploited skilfully by Ireland.

Richard Brown is on the recovery trail from injury and has been used there in the past.

But the key issue with the Western Force trio is that none are specialist openside flankers, and if the World Cup proved anything it was the value of specialists in that position.

Coach Robbie Deans will be keen to find a definitive answer next year, aware that in 2013 the British and Irish Lions will be bringing a squad featuring Sam Warburton and Sean O'Brien, two emerging young No.7 stars.

Hooper, 20, hopes he can usurp Colby Fainga'a as the Brumbies' starting openside and present a compelling case for Deans during next year's Super Rugby season.

"I like to think I have a pretty all-round game," said Hooper, who has topped the early fitness testing at the Brumbies.

"But first thing is first. [Wallabies selection] won't happen unless I get a good amount of game time in Canberra, that would be the first thing.

"That spot is open for a second No.7 at the Wallabies but you have to be doing well for your club consistently.

"Obviously I would like to get the Brumbies starting No.7 spot and keep it.

"The last two years I've been in and out, coming off the bench and going back into the starting 15.

"Hopefully I can put my best foot forward, start the season at No.7 and keep it."

Hooper also dismissed any notion that Australia would struggle in Pocock's absence long term.

"Before Pocock there was George Smith and Phil Waugh, there is always going to be that person who is going to step up," Hooper said.

It almost sound like they are planning the future for after Pococks retirement ...the kids only 23 i think he has a few years left in him. And yes i do agree they need a back up coming through Hodgo isnt getting any younder but i think Liam Gill will be the one going forward i think he will but Beau Robinson out of a job by years end.

Hooper has been talked up the past couple of years, togeher vwith Colby Fianga, yet as Gaffa has mentioned during Super 15 it was Liam Gill who stood up, and I tend to agree he will surpass Beau Robinson later in the year (2012) or at the latest next year (2013).

Matt Hodgson had a huge load to carry last year with Brownie and Pocock out at the start of the season, watch him go this year.

Can't hold it against Matt Hodgson that he wasn't picked in the Squad.
That was selector error, not player error.

One would hope not, but we certainly need some depth against injury. Dave does seem to have picked up an early injury early in several campaigns now - perhaps it is coincidental, but maybe they should have a think about whether his non-playing routine might be making him a little susceptible.

Gill and Hooper shouldn't be considered until after 2013 when they are likely to be able to command a starting gig. Right now it should be between Hodgson and Robinson.

I don't think you can blame Pocock's regime Andy. I mean how can you attribute that to JdP's crocodile roll tackle than caused the injury?
