WA local called into German side

The development of West Australian’s into top level rugby performers has seen another name added to the list with Nedlands Premier Grade player Callum Sauer the most recent local to earn an International rugby cap after being selected in the German National side.

Sauer, who has also represented the Perth Gold side, joined German club Pforzheim after the KWIK Premier Grade Grand Final in July and his impressive performances caught the eye of the German national team coach.

He was invited to train with the German side in early October and made his debut when he came off the bench against the New Zealand Ambassadors on November 5.

He was rewarded further with a run on start against the Netherlands on Saturday, 12 November where Germany won 23-7 and looks set to retain his place in the number four jersey when they take on Poland this Saturday in a European Nations Cup clash.

Sauer’s father Hans said it was an exciting opportunity and the family were extremely proud.

“It came as a quite a surprise that he was invited to train with the German team so for him to be in the run on side has been really exciting,” said Mr Sauer, who has been a long time contributor to the development of rugby in WA and is also President of the Nedlands club.

“I did ask him how he thought Nedlands would go against the German side and he said Neddies would come out on top so he’s still a Neddies boy at heart.”

Such has been Sauer’s impression in Germany he has been asked to play Sevens for the national side after the Europeans Nations tournament concludes and will remain in Europe until September next year.

Congrats to Callum - an International cap is an international cap.. great work and I hope that he continues to help develop rugby in smaller European countries.

Cheers all of you, I know Callum would be rapt to hear of your support. He's enjoying the experience, and has a giggle at the German's lack of flexibility in changing play. He was told by his No. 9 when arriving at a ruck and passing ball to a runner " Zat ist not your chob... zat ist my job even if I am behind you!!!" Another play - running from two in lineout, taking ball from No. 6 jumper and heading to opposition 10, supposed to be tackled = quick ball and so on. In this play, No. 10 fails to tackle Cal, so he keeps going is tackled by 15 and 11, is pinged for holding onto the ball. he asks his support players " where were you" the answer " Ze play is for you to be tackled at 10, not to go past, vee hav not praticed if you go past"...

Poland beat Germany 34-8. Conditions very wintry and a few bounces didn't go their way, but got right royally beaten in Danzig. Now there is a winter break and next match against Czech Republic on 12th March.

Yeah I lived in Frankfurt for a while and played rugby for SC 1880, not a great standard, but a lot of fun, some big lads over there too!
