Nathan Charles and Nick Cummins found themselves behind bars last Thursday but there were more than happy to be there as their incarceration was all in aid of charity at the annual Convicts for a Cause event at Fremantle Prison.

More than $44,000 was raised on the night with all proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Rotary International and Diabetes WA.

Charles and Cummins got right into the spirit of the evening as they mingled with other ‘prisoners’, sold raffle tickets and even put on an impromptu show during the live auction. The Emirates Western Force donated a 2012 jersey signed by the entire squad as well as an opportunity for Charles and Cummins to attend a function of the winning bidders choosing.

The jersey was highly sought after and raised $800 for the charities. Next up Charles and Cummins were put on offer and spirited bidding saw the total reach $1000. To keep the total ticking over the boys were encouraged by a rival bidder to remove their shirts, which they obliged, and another $100 was added to take the total to $1100.

“I’m normally a shy person,” Cummins said with a laugh.

“But with the money going to such great charities we just couldn’t say no to getting the rig out!

“We’ve been training really hard over the last couple of weeks so it was good to get away from the gym and training track and to unwind knowing we’re also giving back to the local community and helping charity. The Convicts for a Cause is a unique event and a really great idea. I’m glad that we were able to part of it,” Cummins added.
