Clever Irish faked way to victory

Tim Horan From: The Daily Telegraph September 21, 2011 7:11pm

IRELAND had a deliberate plan to fake injuries each time there was a breakdown in play last Saturday, so they could slow the game down and frustrate the Wallabies.

How can I be sure? By talking to Irish assistant coach Alan Gaffney in the dressing rooms afterwards.

If James Horwill was more experienced as a captain, he would have blown up about it to referee Bryce Lawrence and really created a scene - there is no way Richie McCaw would have stayed silent if a team used the same tactics against the All Blacks.

Australia's future opponents will have taken notice of the strategy.

Ireland had a game plan for Australia and it worked a treat: to slow the game down just for stoppages, target them in the scrum, and put the high ball up at every opportunity.

They also used the "choker tackle" taught by their defensive coach Les Kiss. They identified that the Australian midfield ran quite upright and successfully held them up to get turnovers.

Maybe, but at the end of the day they both had 15 on the field and they both had 80 minutes to try and out-score one another. Australia weren't good enough. If we are potential world cup winners, then a side like Ireland, who lost all 4 warm up games, should not trouble us, even with strategies like 'tactical injuries'.

What a typical whining Aussie has been... stop worrying about the opposition and worry about the fact that Deans has no plan B and persists with out of form players and those that should not be playing at this level. This is the World Cup not some random test match. Its won by grit, guile and gumption (ran out of good G words so gumption will have to do). Flash may will a pool match but will not win the tournament. Wake up... provincial rugby is one thing.. going up against the worlds best for 8 weeks is a whole new ball game. Man up or go home
