Perth Premier Grade Finals Decided in Dramatic Fashion

    By RugbyWA Media

In a nail biting conclusion to the KWIK Premier Grade regular season the top four has been determined but not without some amazing performances across the deciding matches.

At Allen Park Associates scored a try after the hooter to complete a come from behind 23 – 20 victory over University and secure it's spot in the finals while at the Foreshore Nedlands scored in the final minute to wrap up a dramatic second half comeback and dump Wests Subiaco out of playoff contention.

Neddies, with top spot sewn up weeks ago, struggled to contain a desperate Wests side and found themselves trailing by 23 points at halftime but, as they’ve done on numerous occasions this season, they staged remarkable revival to win 33 – 31.

Shell shocked in the opening 40 minutes the Royal Blues made their charge after the break and scored a try with just a minute remaining levelling the scores at 31 apiece. A successful conversion ensured Neddies remain undefeated at home in 2011.

Rounding out the top four is the white hot Cottesloe who made it eight wins in a row with a 46 – 12 bonus point thrashing of Perth Bayswater. Last season’s grand finalists are the form team of the competition and will meet arch rivals Associates in the minor semi-final next weekend.

Soaks performance against UWA lived up to its billing as the match of the round with drama aplenty throughout the 80 minutes, and beyond.

Associates entered the match knowing they needed to win to be sure of a spot in the top four and the pressure was evident throughout. The Swanbourne outfit appeared to be their own worst enemy with handling errors and poor discipline, which resulted in two yellow cards, threatening to derail the home side.

University, who were assured of finishing second on the ladder regardless of the day's result, controlled the game for the first 60 minutes but in the end Soaks were the more desperate of the two sides and it showed.

The elation when centre Andy Finn crashed over for the game winning score was written all over the faces of the home side.

Associates opened the scoring in the third minute when University was penalised for straying offside on defence allowing flyhalf Matt Dreyer to line up from 30 metres out in front.

His kick sailed through to give the home side a short lived lead as University hit back straight away through the boot of their own five eight, Alan Kingsley.

Dreyer slotted another penalty in the ninth minute to put his side back in front and again Kinglsey tied things immediately, this time after Associates was penalised at the scrum.

Associates won another penalty in the 20th minute after a University player entered a ruck from the side but Dreyer couldn't convert the 40m attempt and the scores remained level.

In the 30th minute Associate's Mike D'Adamo was shown a yellow card for tripping a University player off the ball and the home side faced the prospect of finishing the half a player down.

In a frantic ten minute period before the break both sides came close to scoring the first try of the game only to lose the ball forward with the try line beckoning.

Associates relief at getting D'Adamo back for the start of the second half was short lived as flanker Tom Hobbs was giving his marching orders in the 41st minute for reckless play and thirty seconds later UWA scrumhalf Matt Shaw darted over from the back of the resultant scrum for the first try of the game which Kinglsey converted to give the visitors a seven point lead.

Soaks cut the deficit to four with a well taken penalty by Dreyer after University were caught entering a ruck from the side but ten minutes later some nifty footwork from Kinglsey opened up a gap in Associates defence that the flyhalf dashed through before drawing the last defender and offloading to winger Michael Patching who dotted down next to the posts.

Soaks responded immediately securing possession from the kick off and working the ball through the hands before Dreyer found himself with enough space to crash over for the try.

Dreyer converted his own score and the lead was cut back to four setting up a frenetic finish.

Associates spent the last five minutes of the game camped in University's 22 and won penalty after penalty eventually leading to a yellow card for a professional foul by Uni.

Soaks made the most of their manpower advantage and launched wave after wave of attack which eventually allowed Finn to latch onto a pass and put his head down to barrel over for the score.

“I always believed that we could do it and we left it to the very last play of the game but we got over the line at the end so it's happy days,” Parkin grinned.

University coach Steve McFarland was disappointed with the result and felt that his side had been its own worst enemy on the day.

“We played some good rugby throughout the game, we showed a lot of composure and were in control for much of the match,” he said.

“Once we got ahead we allowed them back in with a very soft try and then it was game on.

“To finish on your line with only 14 men is always going to be a challenge and at the end of the day we were probably the cause of our own demise.

“We made some silly errors, we gained possession down on our own line near the end there and then gave a penalty away which was absolutely crucial.”

McFarland now turns his attention to his side's clash with Nedlands next weekend in the major semi-final.

“We're very excited to be playing in the finals,” he said.

“This club hasn't played in a final since the late 1980's and we've had a great year so far so we'll work hard in the week and prepare for what will be a tough game next Saturday.”

In other matches Palmyra finished off their campaign with a 38 – 33 win over last placed Kalamunda while Rockingham were too good for Wanneroo at Lark Hill, recording a 38 – 28 win

Well done to cott. 3rd last after the end of the first round and now in the finals. Before you all start screaming "force players" they have had, in the second round, JOC for 1 and sheahan for 2, just as many games as force players have had for soaks uni etc. Cott had swanepool and bartholemouz (apologies for spelling) at the start of the year which also coincided with them being third last. Their resurgence has been on the back of two 18yo props, yes 18 think about that for a second, one of which couldn't weigh more than 90kg. Well recovered cott.

Any truth to the rumour that Bartholomeuz and Pusey are the 2012 Cott coaches?

Was the current guy given the drop kick?
