KWIK Premier Grade Preview – Week 17

    By RugbyWA Media
    Contributors: Josh Zimmerman

    Nedlands vs Palmyra
    The Foreshore – 3.30pm
    First Round: Palmyra 21 – 34 Nedlands

Sixth placed Palmyra convincingly beat Perth Bayswater 54 – 19 to keep its playoff hopes alive but must now travel to the Foreshore to take on the minor Premiers who have not dropped a game at home all season.

Nedlands are coming off a 26 – 12 victory over Kalamunda and have already sewn up top spot with two games to play, although they will no doubt be looking to carry some momentum with them in to the finals.

Realistically speaking Palmyra will need to win both of its remaining games to have any chance of reeling in the likes of Wests, Cottesloe and Associates who are all four points ahead on the ladder.

Paly will be dangerous and desperate and if Nedlands fields a weakened side to rest players ahead of the finals an upset could well be on the cards in this one.

    Perth Bayswater vs Associates
    Pat O'Hara Reserve – 3.30pm
First Round: Associates 37 – 24 Perth Bayswater

Associates is third and holds a strong percentage advantage over its 44 point ladder neighbours Cottesloe and Wests Subiaco but will endeavour to avoid having to rely on that supremacy by securing a victory in this one.

Perth Bayswater is still chasing a win that would ensure they do not end up back on the bottom after a season that started so brightly.

    Rockingham vs Kalamunda
    Lark Hill – 3.30pm
    First Round: Kalamunda 17 – 15 Rockingham

The only game of the round that has no bearing on the final playoff picture takes place at Lark Hill between two sides that would be disappointed with the outcome of their respective seasons.

Rocky put in a good performance against the white hot University last weekend and would love to balance the 2011 ledger against the Bulls after they were edged the first meeting between these sides in Round 8.

Kalamunda will be motivated by the fact that it can still avoid finishing last with victory in its two remaining games.

Rockingham have a tendency to match the quality of their opposition – good or bad – so expect this one to be exciting even though it doesn't count towards the playoffs.

    University vs Cottesloe
    McGillivray Oval – 3.30pm
    First Round: Cottesloe 31 – 42 University

Cottesloe has won six in a row to revive its season but now faces its toughest test to date in the form of second placed University which is on a five match winning streak of its own.

Cottesloe ground out a 14 – 5 win over Wanneroo in round 16 to hold on to fourth but with Wests Subiaco, Palmyra and even the Roo Dogs in striking distance will need to continue its magical run if it wishes to keep its destiny in its own hands going in to round 18.

University has wrapped up second and may, like Nedlands, be tempted to rest players ahead of the finals.

On the other hand, beating Cottesloe and possibly knocking them out of finals contention may even be a more attractive option given the Seagulls proven track record in the playoffs.

    Wanneroo vs Wests Subiaco
    Kingsway – 3.30pm
First round: Wests Subiaco 33 – 36 Wanneroo

The first meeting between these sides produced a high scoring thriller with Wanneroo emerging eventual winners by just three points. With so much on the line for both teams excitement levels in this one are sure to reach similar heights.

For Wanneroo this game is effectively a final as defeat would scuttle any hope of making a run past next weekend. The Roo Dogs have gone off the boil a bit recently losing three of their last four but are back home at Kingsway and will play with the ferocity of a side whose season is in the balance.

Wests Subiaco are fifth and will be just as desperate to win this game to keep up with Cottesloe and Associates going in to round 18. Wests have also been disappointing of late losing to Rockingham in round 14 and then getting comprehensively outplayed by Soaks on the weekend.

Wests' Coach Steven Montgomery said his side was looking forward to this game because they felt they let themselves down in the round 8 meeting so expect this one to go right down to the wire.

    Premier Grade feels the Force

Emirates Western Force players continue to show their support of the KWIK Premier Grade with more than a dozen in action for a range of teams in the penultimate round of a pulsating local season.

Super Rugby players have been involved in the top tier West Australian competition throughout the year with some 18 professionally contracted personnel suiting up on various occasions.

Youngster James O’Connor enjoyed a match for Cottesloe before heading off on Wallabies duties while experienced scrumhalf Brett Sheehan has represented the Seagulls twice.

Prior to the 2011 KWIK Premier Grade season all Emirates Western Force contracted professionals nominated a local club and every side, bar Wests Subiaco, has benefited from professional representation at some stage in 2011. Wests had Matt Dunning aligned with them but his move to French side Biarritz following the Super Rugby season limited his availability for the club.

With Emirates Western Force players congregating in Perth ahead of a two match tour to Samoa later in the month, the KWIK Premier Grade will benefit with thirteen (13) players lining up on Saturday.

Former Australian Seven’s Player of the Year James Stannard continues his service with Palmyra, a club he has represented since 2006 (and won the PG Hampshire Award that year), in their all-important clash with top of the table Nedlands at the Foreshore.

Over at Pat O’Hara Reserve Alfie Mafi starts at fullback for Perth Bayswater, his sixth game for Baysie this season, and will be hoping to get the step on Emirates Western Force team mates Paul Alo-Emile and Tom Hockings who’ll pack down for Associates.

Kalamunda can look to senior academy prop Cruze Ah-Nau and key playmaker Willie Ripia in their match against Rockingham at Lark Hill while impressive front rower Kieran Longbottom, who enjoyed a breakout season in Super Rugby, returns to Rocky, the club he developed at as a junior.

In the northern suburbs, young lock Phoenix Battye renews his acquaintances with Wanneroo team mates as they take on Wests Subiaco in a match the Roo Dogs must win to remain in the finals hunt.

At McGillivray Oval the two form teams of the competition, UWA and Cottesloe, go head to head. There will also be bragging rights up for grabs between the two Emirates Western Force hookers as Ben Whittaker starts for Cott and Nathan Charles for Uni.

Cottesloe has won six matches on the trot which started in Week 11 against Rockingham when James O’Connor joined younger brother Jonny, who has been a fixture at the Gulls all season, to kick start the amazing run. Cott has also had Mark Bartholomeusz play for them this season however injury is preventing his involvement this weekend, as is the case for Gene Fairbanks.

Uni meanwhile have sewn up second place and are on a five game winning streak of their own. Along with Charles, emerging lock Sam Wykes and senior academy player Ted Postal will start in the forwards for UWA while Rory Sidey and Nick Cummins add to the club’s backs.

With five teams vying for the two remaining places in the finals, week 17 of the KWIK Premier Grade will no doubt see some high stakes rugby being played.

The deciding week for a number of clubs - good luck to all with or without the Force players. It will be great to see them in action this weekend.

Oh Hansie - do you really believe that?

The did beat the Roo Dogs with an unencumbered team and JOC did not make a bit of difference against Rocky as he was marked out of the game. Sheehan had an impact I will agree but does one player make all the difference?

Based on that Rucking Good then Cott have nothing to fear from UNI.

WRT the Rocky game, I am told whether JOC was marked out of the game or not, the whole mood, vibe, intensity and enthusiasm of Cott lifted a notch. On that basis you have to agree One player did make a difference.

Hansie Don’t get me wrong I dislike Cott just as much as the next guy, but I cant help laugh that the team that has road on the back of the so many Force players over the years will this week get a taste of what the rest of the Perth clubs have felt for so long. Ultimately resulting in them not making the finals!

How's about a HUGE congratulations to RWA for getting the force boys to play in PERTH that we all wanted not all that long ago, and were complaining that they all went east.

Great for the comp and getting players to keep playing in perth to become super players.

regardless for the Force players, everyone has something to fear from Uni - they have had a cracking season and are playing a great style of rugby. Good luck to all this weekend.

Whether the Force boys are the difference we will have to see after the final whistle.
