    Melbourne firming for wunderkind O'Connor
Bret Harris The Australian June 07, 2011 12:00AM

THE Melbourne Rebels have re-emerged as firm favourites for the prized signature of Wallabies wunderkind James O'Connor, who is expected to make a decision on his future in the next few days.

The Rebels were regarded as frontrunners to secure O'Connor when he put himself on the open market a few months ago after becoming dissastisfied with his initial offer from the Western Force.

Since then, the Brumbies and the Queensland Reds have joined the race for O'Connor, leaving the NSW Waratahs as the only Super Rugby team to show no interest, even after they lost Kurtley Beale to the Rebels.

The new play by the Rebels is believed to have unnerved other suitors, although no one is giving up hope yet. There is speculation that O'Connor will leave Perth, but that is yet to be confirmed.

It is understood O'Connor was waiting to see who the Force recruited for next year and so far it has signed only Wallabies and Brumbies prop Salesi Ma'afu and ex-Chiefs second-rower Toby Lynn. Brumbies coach-elect Jake White met O'Connor while he was in Australia last month on a reconnaissance mission.

James O'Connor tipped to remain in Perth

Brilliant young Wallaby James O'Connor has decided to stay in Western Force colours
    Source: The Sunday Times

WALLABIES utility back James O'Connor is expected to announce he is remaining with the Western Force in the Super Rugby competition.

The hottest player on the market, O'Connor had been chased by the Brumbies, Melbourne Rebels and Queensland Reds.

There was strong speculation the Rebels had firmed as favourites to secure O'Connor, but it is believed he is staying in Perth where he began his Super Rugby career in 2008.

Irrespective of the conflicting pieces the tide "appears" to be turning, here hoping we hold onto him.

With Cooper more than likely moving off after 2012, he could be heading back to QLD, but lets be thankful, at this stage I would be happy with another year as a starting point, it was better than not at all.

    No O'Connor deal...yet

Both James O'Connor and the Western Force have denied reports the rugby union pin-up boy has re-signed with the Perth Super 15 franchise.

There have been numerous reports today that 20-year-old O'Connor has turned down the advances of the Melbourne Rebels and signed to play for the Force again in 2012.

But the player himself took to social networking site Twitter to say there was no news to announce yet.

"journos everywhere at training- nothing finalised yet tweeps n want you guys to be the 1st to know. Hopefully have something for you soon..,'' O'Connor tweeted.

The Force, which is fourth in the Australian conference of the Super 15 competition with four wins from 14 games, also denied a deal had been completed.

"There is a lot of talk but I think it's all coming from the media," Force forwards coach Nick Stiles said.

"In regards to James we're confident we've got a very strong progam here, we feel we've got good development programs in place for him and we've recruited strongly and our retention has been great.

"He (O'Connor) came here and developed as a player and if he wants to continue developing there are going to be good opportunities for him to do that here."

Beat me to it Slomo. Not surprising given that Bret Harris still has a job.
