    Mackay link to Rats

FORMER Waratahs and Western Force back Lachie Mackay could make a surprise comeback with Warringah to help them out of their injury crisis.

Mackay has spent the past three years playing in Europe and was a spectator at the Rats’ game against Northern Suburbs at North Sydney Oval last Saturday, the day after he returned home.

He revealed that his playing future is uncertain.

“Ideally, I’d love be involved with Australian rugby again and give it one more shot,” Mackay said. “That’s easier said than done these days because there are so many good kids running around.

“But I’m only 28, so I’m not too old. There is still plenty of life in the legs.”

In a positive sign for the Rats, at least one Super team has already expressed interest in talking to Mackay.

And if he does get a start with an Australian Super Rugby side he could be playing with Warringah again.

“If I’m not going back to Leeds, I could have the opportunity to play out the season down there,” he said.

Having Mackay back in the midfield would be a huge boost for the Rats, who are sitting in last place on the competition table. They were so short of troops last weekend that coach Sam Harris had to come out of retirement to play the final 30 minutes at inside centre in first grade.

After finishing up with the Force, Mackay, a Forest junior, spent two seasons with French club Brieve and one at Leeds in a move that revived his career.

“I left with a pretty big injury cloud over my head. I didn’t have a great couple of years after I left the Waratahs and went to the Force,” he said.

“But things have been brilliant since I went overseas, I haven’t had any of those issues that I had before I left.”

My money would say the Rebels or Brumbies.

I wouldn't mind seeing him back at the Force. I always thought he was alright.
