Nathan Sharpe: Close is not good enough

    NATHAN SHARPE, The West Australian
    April 6, 2011, 6:40 am

Sunday can be an awfully painful day after a loss like the one against the Rebels.

It is always a good feeling when the Monday review comes around and everyone who has spent Sunday pondering the weekend's game has the same message.

It means we are on the same page and problems can be worked on. Thankfully that was the case this week and we are united in our approach to start winning close games.

I'm amazed every time I circle the ground post game to embrace our wonderful fans, how loyal and supportive they are. It is so great to be involved in such a community and it isn't good enough as a playing group to lose games as we did on the weekend.

This competition disappears too quickly each year to look back and lament the one that got away. We need to start turning the tight losses into confident wins.

The highest physical point on the field of rugby is at the top of a line-out jumper's lift.

With precision timing and good core stability, even hoisting a 130kg man can be pretty easy work when your two lifters know what they are doing. You can lose perspective as to how high you actually get and how dangerous it can be.

Matt Hodgson suffered a shocking shoulder injury on Saturday. While being hurled into the air by Pek Cowan and I, an opposing player slipped under his legs and toppled him over.

The No.1 rule in line-out lifting is never drop your jumper. Sorry Hodgo, I owe you a drink.

The Waratahs this weekend will be a strong set piece contest for us with their scrum a very powerful aspect of their game. Coupled with this they have some real firepower out wide in old Force favourite Drew Mitchell on the wing.

Games against them are always tight and with the big ball carrying No.8 Wycliff Palu back in action, our defensive nous will be tested again.

This weekend is special for the team as it a real opportunity for us to support David Pocock's charity, EightyTwenty Vision.

We'll be wearing a fantastic new one-off jersey and I know the boys will be proud to run out in them.

Sorry Sharpie, I didn't show much loyalty last week, but defend my decision to do so.

I'm surprised you had many fans to embrace, there was a real crush for the exits by the time I got there.

Hopefully this week there's something to make me want to stay and shake your hand again.

Sharpie, if you think the crowd is amazing after a close loss, think how we'll be after a close win! Remember Hill's drop goal to beat the Stormers last year? That was an appreciative crowd.

I'll always stay around to shake Sharpie's hand. Just one look at his face when he was doing the after match interview last week was enough to show how much he was hurting

Hence my question.."surely by the time the reds roll around they'll be so overconfident they'll name Quade at prop, we might have a chance to sneak past them by playing 10 man football (that is, assuming we can find ten men who can play football)

I doubt the lot that played today have the balls to play soccer!
