    Injuries prove costly for Force

    NICK TAYLOR, The West Australian
    April 7, 2011, 7:32 am

The Western Force 2010 injury crisis did not just hurt the club on the field, it put a huge hole in their finances.

RugbyWA, the Super Rugby club's umbrella body, posted a loss of almost $900,000 last year but about $500,000 was spent on the emergency recruiting and upgrading to the senior squad of eight players including David Hill, Scott Staniforth, Nathan Charles and Jono Jenkins during the injury crisis.

Budget figures from 2010 also reveal that RugbyWA received no income from corporate facilities they built for $3.1million at nib Stadium when they were leased for concerts and other sports by stadium manager Allia Venue Management.

When the Force quit Subiaco Oval in 2009 they had to upgrade nib Stadium, build and lease new corporate suites and a marquee for 500 people and install 2000 extra seats, lighting, media and change room facilities.

They were given a $2 million State Government loan and used a further $1.1 million of their own.

Force chief executive Vern Reid said the club was considering approaching the government to forego the loan and was investigating ways of gaining compensation for others' use of the facilities.

"Clearly it is in our best interests to have the loan forgiven and equally to recover the $1.1m that has gone into a community facility that anyone who turns up gets the benefit of on the back of our investment," Reid said.

However Allia chief executive Peter Bauchop said they did not charge extra for any of the facilities installed by the Force.

"The Force has made a tremendous contribution to the facilities but we don't charge extra rent for those components," he said. "The venue becomes the property of the licensee or promoter, some might want to use the facilities but we don't increase the hire because of the extra components."

The Force lease on the temporary facilities expires in August 2012.

The government has pledged $82.5 million for a new eastern stand.

"We have approached the government informally about forgiving the $2 million loan and we will approach them formally when we know exactly what's happening with the further development of nib Stadium," Reid said.

We have guys in the Perth Comp. that could fill a couple of holes too. A whole lot cheaper.
