Australian consular officials have reached a group of stranded Australian and New Zealand rugby players and helped organise their families' evacuation to Tokyo.

But former Western Force squad member Scott Fardy, former All Black Pita Alatini and coach Paul Hodder will stay on in the devastated town of Kamaishi with their teammates from the Kamaishi Seawaves Rugby Club to help in recovery of bodies and clean-up efforts.

Scott's sister Lisa Fardy told The Australian last night she was "100 per cent sure" ex-Eastwood fullback Peter Miller, his family and the Alatini family were all safe and heading back to Tokyo by bus after assistance from Australian and New Zealand consular officials.

"Scott had a sat phone and I spoke to him for about 30 seconds," Ms Fardy said. "We weren't concerned for Scott and we're not surprised by his actions."
