    Sevens Competiton for Perth

I have it on very good authority, (an unnamed sauce if you like) that Perth is putting together a proposal for a Sevens Competiton. I do not know if this is a submission to try and wrestle the iRB Sevens from Adelaide or if this is more a club based international type competition, either way it will mean more rugby in Perth which is good for eneryone

I would be expecting any news to come via Channel Nine in Perth

I can't answer that one FS, because I do not know the answer. I am guessing because of the people I know that are involved that is probably a RugbyWA inititive.

RugbyWA ran a local 7's comp for a couple of years after Cottesloe found they weren't making enough money from their Easter 7's (which had been a pretty good tournament up till then). RugbyWA gave up on it though, and Cott ran a 7's tournament of sorts again last year with indifferent interest being shown..

Perth RC ran a 10's tournament for many years, and I think Kala tried one recently too.

The problem with 7's (and 10's for that matter) in WA has been that the tournaments have been run pre season when clubs have not been at full strength or have not wanted to "display their wares", and distance and costs have made it hard to attract overseas or Eastern States teams.

Put that together with the parochialism and jealousy between the local clubs, and my conclusion is that unless a hell of a lot of prize money is injected, it is run mid season, and run by RugbyWA, it will not be majorly successful.

Would go further Fulv and say to be of the status of Adelaide and the like and to attract the prize monies required that it would require an Event co-ordinator from the City of Perth or similar to underwrite and run it. Would expect RugbyWa to only be able to "support" it fully and use it as an opportunity to give our splinter lads a really good runout perhaps August or September would be the right time of the year.

Also would expect some IOC monies to be invovled somehow as well.

    James Stannard for captain IMHO.

Just came back from Darwin 7's an there were a few West Aus 7's team on display. Some handy players the teams did WA proud! I’m sure the clubs could work there pre season around a one sevens weekend. Would be a good chance for new players to press for spots!

A couple of the Perth teams (Cott, Paly and Southern Lions) went to the Singapore Sevens in November last year and had a great crack. The Cott boys even scored a try against the South African Vipers (coached by the SA sevens coach Paul Truew)

Excellent tournament and I hope that more teams try and head up this yeat as it is one of the only times that local lads will get to face off against international opposition and we all know the stories that come out of those encounters. They last for a life time.

    Gotta Love Rugby 7's.

The speed of the game is good, only one down side to Rugby 7's though.

A lot of the time if you beat one defender you are in a large gap and unlucky not to score. I know its faster and more exciting but one miss tackle shouldn't result in points everytime.

Agreed with the one missed tackle which is wht fat buggers like me much prefer 10s especially when the tournaments are help in Bali, Bangkok and Jakarta which just adds to the fun of the game.

Don't think that's quite right re one missed tackle = try. Modern 7s rugby (at most levels) is played with a "sweeper" (akin to a full back) and now more often than not, a missed tackle does not automatically result in a try. Hence you will have noted that in the more competitive games, tries are hard to come by.

    Worcestershire's less popular second recipe?

A IRB 7's bid would definitely require some form of government funding, Adelaide is up for renegotiation next year, but there are already rumors that bids from the Gold Coast and Melbourne are going to make it quite hard for Adelaide to retain the tournament.
