Perth has support from the clubs as an area for expansion for three reasons: because the time difference between there and the eastern states would allow it to fit in nicely with live television programming; nib Stadium is already available as a venue and the economy there is seen to be booming.
It is understood there are influential figures in Perth who would be prepared to get behind a bid there.

As the next TV deal is tipped to inject up to $1 billion into the game, franchises including the Central Coast, Perth, central Queensland and Ipswich have targeted 2013 as the year for inclusion.

However, existing clubs want to ensure their financial security is guaranteed and NRL chief executive David Gallop said yesterday following the conference that there was no guarantee the game would move to 18 teams by 2013.

Western Australian Rugby League chief executive John Sackson also said it would be a setback if expansion was delayed.

West would still go wild for elite league, says Geyer

    http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/l...204-18knd.html
    Daniel Lane

December 5, 2010 FORMER Western Reds enforcer Mark Geyer has urged for Perth to be resurrected as a rugby league centre by insisting it was on the verge of ''great things'' before being disbanded in the aftermath of the Super League war.

The Reds were one of four expansionary teams to join the Australian Rugby League competition in 1995 before they defected to Super League. The outpost became a casualty of the war when it was shut down as part of the peace deal brokered between the ARL and News Ltd but they are in the mix to re-enter in 2013.

''We have to give Perth another go,'' said Geyer, who was one of the team's big-name recruits.

''I'm going to be accused of being biased because I played there, but I know the potential the place offers.

''We only dipped our toe in the water over there. When I was there 15 years ago the junior competition was good. While there were only five teams in the competition there was a lot of quality there, and from what I understand that is still the case.''

(posters edit: there were at least 10 clubs with juniors during that period; not sure why he thinks there were just 5.)

League has continued to thrive at a junior level, with 3000 registered players, and seven of them have been signed to NRL teams.

Geyer said the so-called tyranny of distance was not an excuse to ignore Western Australia.

''If two AFL teams can thrive there so far away from Melbourne and the [Super rugby team] the Western Force is based there along with the Perth Wildcats NBL team and the WA cricket team, I can't see why league can't have a WA team in the national competition.

''The 4½-hour flight from Sydney to there is nothing. It is a great market, a growing population and rich in potential.''

Geyer, who also favoured the Central Coast bid, said he would welcome the day when the elite rugby league competition boasted 20 teams.

New Chairman and Board for WARL

David Hobbs was elected onto the Board at the 2010 Annual General Meeting on Monday and was subsequently voted in as the Chairman for 2011.
David has served as a Director for the past six months, filling an available vacant position on the Board and contributing to the marketing and sponsorship areas. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Professionals Group WA & NT. David was also involved with the original launch of the Fremantle Football Club where he was employed for several years developing the Marketing and Sponsorship of the club in its inaugural years. David replaces Terry Creasey in the chair who, while being elected for a further two year term, decided to step down due to business commitments.
The new board line up provides a strong business base for WA Rugby League moving forward in a time where they could oversee the potential of creating a new National Rugby League franchise by 2013. A decision on the expansion of the NRL is expected by the middle of 2011.
    Other board directors include:
Paul Bransby, Director of Finance Exchange Australia
Charlie Burkhardt, Director of Westside Group International
Richard Campbell, Director of CMS Events
Terry Creasey, Franchisee Owner of McDonalds Stores
Bruce Havilah, Principal Partner of Havilah Legal
Bradley Hopes, Principal of Brad Hopes Promotions
Sean Somerville, Director of Somerville Accountants and Somerville Corporate

WA Reds strongly backed to join expanded league

WA Reds have received a unanimous endorsement from the 16 NRL clubs to join the competition in 2013.

The non-binding vote of confidence at a recent NRL conference in Byron Bay offers a massive injection of confidence as the West Australian Rugby League plans to present its bid in March or April.

WARL chief executive John Sackson says a new WA team, which would play out of nib Stadium, would have the corporate and crowd support to succeed long term, unlike the Western Reds franchise that operated at the WACA from 1995-97.

The NRL is likely to expand the competition to 18 teams in 2013 with Perth a leading contender, along with Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Logan or Ipswich south of Brisbane, and Gosford on the NSW Central Coast.

The WARL believes three key selling points, the $82.5 million State Government-backed redevelopment of the eastern grandstand at nib Stadium, WA's booming economy and the WA TV time zone, will be key to the success of the bid.

"David Gallop (the NRL CEO) has already given the stadium a big tick, the players like coming here, the coaches like coming here," WARL chief executive John Sackson said.

"We have a booming economy and the infrastructure that comes with a capital city such as Perth with its strong corporate support.

"We have a proud rugby league heritage. Look at the Western Reds, who played at the WACA which was not an ideal ground by any means to watch rugby league and they attracted average crowds of 16,500 per game.

"Perth is tailor made for games being televised back into the eastern states because of our time zone.

"To have the support of clubs, the CEOs and the chairmen of the existing clubs, for them to vote unanimously for Perth as a destination for expansion is a very positive statement."

The WARL would need at least 18 months to build a team but is well on the way to building a $15 million annual budget to run an NRL franchise.

"Our plan is to present to the NRL's new independent commission in March-April next year so in the meantime we will be proactive and build a sustainable, robust, irresistible business plan that hopefully gets us over the line."

Meanwhile, David Hobbs has been elected chairman of the WARL board.

Hobbs, CEO of the Professionals Group WA & NT, is no stranger to setting up clubs.

He was with the Fremantle Dockers from inception, helping to set up its marketing and sponsorship arm. Hobbs replaces Terry Creasey who stepped down because of business commitments.
