Force player on drink drive charge

    Nick Taylor, The West Australian
    January 13, 2011, 2:55 pm

Western Force and Wallabies star Cameron Shepherd has been charged with drink driving and driving with a suspended licence.

Shepherd, 25, was stopped by police in December and is waiting for a court date.

He will continue training for the 2011 Super Rugby season but is expected to face an Australian Rugby Union disciplinary tribunal following the alleged code of conduct breach.

The Western Force said in a statement: "The ARU Disciplinary Tribunal will consider the Court’s determination and will convene if required following completion of the legal process, which is expected to be finalised within the coming months.

"ARU protocols require that all alleged code of conduct breaches for Australian contracted Super Rugby players are to be heard by an ARU Disciplinary Tribunal rather than at the provincial level.

"As this matter will shortly be before the Court no further comment will be made at this stage."

In May last year Shepherd was convicted of driving a car while his licence was suspended.

Perth Magistrate's Court was told at the time that he was caught driving in Wembley in April.

He pleaded guilty and Magistrate Paul Heaney fined him $400 and suspended his licence for nine months.

His licence had been cancelled until July after another driving offence in 2008.

Bloody hell, drink driving while on a suspended license.

Does that mean possible jail time?

Possible.....if he was shagging the Magistrates daughter in the court at the time of sentencing.

Most likely permanent suspension of licence if hes blown over 0.15

Its not the being drunk bit that concerns me.

Driving when your license is suspended is very serious, and a criminal charge.

Dunno but I recall a bloke in the Kimberley getting busted three times in the one night...

Wouldn't there be a redundancy in "permanent suspension"?

Does he not have a previous conviction in Sydney?
A double would not look good on his C.V.
I hope he rides this one out as he is a delightful bloke and a bloody good footballer as well as being an integral part of our team.

Travelling Gerry, his license is currently suspended.
It wasnt suspended in the past and he has got it back now. He doesnt have it.

While I cant say for certain that in WA it is the case, in SA driving with a suspended license is a serious issue and a jail sentence may be given.

He may end up with a suspended sentence. But if that were the case I would not be surprised if his contract with the Force was terminated.

I hope not as he is a great player.

Precedent would be good to look at, didn't Kurtley get done in a similar manner recently? What other professional footballers have been caught for similar offended and what did the tribunal give them?

As seers as this is, I can't imagine it is worse than quokkagate and brownie's still with us

Yes. Suspended for driving whilst previously suspended.

The courts over here are a joke. They keep suspending, people keep driving. Eventually they might sieze your car after the 7th time.

My prediction = 2 years or permanent suspension of licence.

Really, in WA they dont treat that sort of thing as serious?

It is essentially contempt of court.

And GIGS, I think it is worse than quokkagate, but we shall see. It will really depend on what the courts decide.

I think the worst he will get is a suspended sentence and he will be unlucky to get that.

I did a uni placement at a drug and alcohol centre and anecdotal evidence suggests that if he makes a good effort to go to a DOA centre and he didn't have too high a BAC he definitely wouldn't be looking at jail time. He would be looking at a *long* time with a suspended licence though.
