    That'll do me

    A deer with no eyes

We're not talking about playing under 10's

We're talking about scrummaging against very powerful professionals who grew up scrumming in the mud and driving rain in places like the south of Wales, Munster, the high veldt, NZ to name but a few...........not some school for poonces where the scrums are uncontested.

The fact our under 19's can't push in scrums is the root of Australia's scrum ills. There is a lot to learn in the engine room that won't be rehearsed on a scrum machine that doesn't push back, bore in, take the weight off, pull you down, drive into your ribs, go early, head butt you, bite your ear, snot you in the nose, sledge you.....I could go on. Our poor performance at national level is evidence enough that there is a lot to learn that can't be found in any manual.

There is no prescription for scrumming. You have to learn the old fashioned way by getting belted by units with years of experience. You only learn every dirty trick in the book and more importantly how to combat it by scrumming against the best.

Just doing some time doesn't qualify you either.

Luckily the Force has some very hard heads that have scrummed the worlds best. They'll do OK despite Stiles. The young blokes will learn more off Dunning

Our national team has been raped on successive weekends by Wales, England and Italy. What odds another debacle against France? Maybe they haven't read the instructions?

Larry may be able to confirm this, but I believe that only two NFL players have gone on to coach a winning superbowl team.

Not being a smart @rse, I'm interested in your thoughts?
... Those who can- do! Those who can't- Teach!

You could be a champion scrummager and be a good coach; However you could also be a champion scrummager and turn out to be a shizen hausen coach. Being good at something doesn't neccesarily make you any good at coaching it. (Although, logically, it makes sense that you must know something about the discipline you are coaching)

Ever learnt from mistakes? Even if it took a long time for the penny to drop and it seemed the lesson learned was way to late to be of any use (as a player). Maybe that's how it works with some coaches. If you can impart useful knowledge no matter how you acquired it then I reckon you're in with a chance.

I watched most of the match last night, i don't think we got raped at all against Italy... Slipper will learn what to do against a cheating tighthead, who was caught once for what he was doing, but he will know next time what to do.

Also Rex and gigs, you don't need to be great to be able to coach, though i think you do need to have played at a high level (at least amateur, i suppose) to be able to coach, especially in a scrum, there is so much that goes on and so many little intricacies that you would need first hand experience to be able to relay what could happen.

I think they also need to have a lot of opposed scrumming, against various different 'cheats', so rolling the shoulder, boring, collapsing, etc. I don't know how they do it, but it should be constantly against 'dirty' scrums.

I agree that some of his insults do seem to get a bit personal, but apart from that I enjoy his colourful turn of phrase and you must admit that a lot of his posts can be quite entertaining.
I don't have a problem with Rex offering a different point of view, it usually encourages debate and discussion which is what a forum is about. Its going to be a long off-season so I'm happy to see Rex and his myriad of personalities continue to stir up controversy.
For the same reasons I don't have a problem with TOCC, we all know that he is a banana-bender and so we should expect an alternate point of view, he also manages to encourage debate...

    meanwhile....

What does that mean? Yes I am serious, I really don't understand the raw prawn reference.

Nah. He gets most of his material from here..

    http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/league/footyshow/

    and here..........

    http://www.eraofthebiff.com/p21-yarn-11.html

But, when he talks Rugby, it seems original material and generally on or near the mark.

For what mines worth, I agree that tight 5 coaching is better done by an experienced person. Stiles was very very average at international level but, credit where it's due, he played 67 super matches and fits the experienced bill. At least he's been shunted around by the best so he might be able to let them know what not to do.

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

Without Rex, you boys spend most of your time dribbling about the meaning of avatars and where you'll be seated next season. The only variation to the monotony is some trolling by some brumby supporters and some thoughtless provocation by some less than stimulating Queenslanders. God bless their challenged souls. I know you love to have a crack at Rex.

    I am a loveable rascal

    Every forum needs a villain

Consider me a sobering yin to your Force loving yang. Someone must monitor the forum content for reality.

    Coach loves to ban me.

PM him if I become overbearing. He'll be only too happy to get rid of me

I still think it is ridiculous to hire a scrum gimp as scrum coach. My opinion for what it is worth

Ahhh Rex....but the best may not necessarily get a test.

You're old enough to remember Sam Trimble.
