New Western Force defence coach Phil Blake brings a simple philosophy to the game.
"It starts and finishes defensively," the former rugby league star said.
And he believes a strong defence relies on player attitude and resolve.
"It's hard work and that is where pride comes into it," he said. "There needs to be that resolve that we're not giving up five points under any circumstances.
"I want to bring a strong constitution to that part of the game and for everyone to understand that if we're not attacking and scoring tries then we're defending and stopping them."
Head coach Richard Graham said Blake, who will also be involved in designing a skills program, would bring a no-nonsense approach.
"It was apparent in talking with Phil that he is very passionate about the defensive aspect of the game and driven to see his teams do well," Graham said.
"He is a quality guy, uncomplicated in his approach to the game and having been involved in professional sport for over 20 years will bring a no-nonsense approach."
After the former head coach at NSW Shute Shield club Manly was earmarked for the Force role, the Wallabies showed an interest and he has joined the Australian side on their northern hemisphere tour.
He will arrive in Perth in December by which time Graham should have completed his coaching team with the appointment of a forwards specialist.
Blake scored 550 points in more than 260 games in a 15-year league career at six clubs.
After a brief spell as coach of South Sydney he began his union career with Southern Districts in 2006. He led Manly's reserves to the 2007 title before taking charge of the first team.
