Western Force will appoint former rugby league great Phil Blake as their new defence coach this week.
Blake, as revealed by The West Australian, has been targeted by the Force to strengthen a defence that let in 42 tries last year - albeit in an injury-ravaged season.
He turned the Manly Marlins into one of the best defensive sides in the NSW Shute Shield after moving to the club four years ago. They had the best points against record in last year's competition.
After the Force began talks with Blake, 46, the Wallabies invited him to run defensive drills and last week appointed him as an assistant to Robbie Deans for the northern hemisphere tour, replacing Force head coach Richard Graham.
Graham has also identified the man he wants as his forwards coach.
Among the favourites are former Wallaby and Queensland prop Nick Stiles, who has been forwards coach with Japanese club Kubota Spears since 2007 after coaching Queensland University, and Junior Waratahs head coach Joe Barakat, who is a specialist set piece coach.
The Force are still some way from making a decision on Hurricanes winger David Smith. If they decide to make a move for the powerful runner it would mean using their marquee signing option because, although Smith, 25, has not been capped by the All Blacks, he has played for the New Zealand sevens side.
