    NEW RUPA CEO APPOINTED

The Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Greg Harris as Chief Executive Officer.

Greg has a successful track record in a diverse range of professional appointments in sport and business.

He was the Executive Director of Sydney University Sport from 1992 until 2008. He held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Rugby WA and the Western Force from April 2008 through to June 2009 and most recently acted as a consultant to the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise.

He was also Chairman of the National Rugby League Education and Welfare Committee from 2003 to 2008, and Chairman of Selectors at the Sydney Swans from 1994 to 1996.

RUPA President, Adam Freier, welcomed the appointment of Greg to the position. “Greg's knowledge, experience and achievements in Australian sport are unique. We are delighted that he has taken up the challenges of this role“.

“Through his previous appointments at the Western Force and at the Rebels he has extensive relationships and networks in the game and is well respected by all stakeholders”.

“We are confident that his skills and his knowledge of the broad Australian sporting landscape will bring much to the role which RUPA plays in the management and development of professional rugby in Australia”.

Harris said that he was excited by his appointment and confident that RUPA would play a valued and constructive role in the new directions which Australian rugby will take from 2011 with the introduction of the new Super Rugby format.

“Rugby has always been known as a player's game and I am delighted with the opportunity to represent the professional players and their best interests”.

“I look forward to working with the Board of RUPA and the player group as a whole to ensure that this occurs and that the players can make a substantial contribution to the game of rugby in Australia both on and off the field”.

Greg's appointment will commence on 2 August 2010.

How come Unions have a Secretary but Associations, which are unions that don't want to be seen as Unions, have a CEO?
