    Wallabies squad for Tri-Nations

Qantas Wallabies Named For 2010 Bundaberg Red Tri Nations Rugby Series

    July 08, 2010 - 10:00am
    Story by: ARU

The selection of four new caps, and the return of the experienced front rowers Stephen Moore and Benn Robinson, highlights the Qantas Wallabies squad that has been unveiled today ahead of this year’s Bundaberg Red Tri Nations Rugby Series.

Just 28 of the 30 scheduled names have been released, with the coaching panel of Robbie Deans, Jim Williams and Richard Graham, and selector David Nucifora, opting to play a waiting game on the final two spots before confirming the final playing roster.

“We still have some decisions to make, and would like to see a little bit more club rugby before settling on the final two positions,” Qantas Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans says.

“Given the difficulties that we have experienced this year, in terms of our injury circumstance, we feel that it is prudent to allow ourselves a little bit more time in this instance to cover off any other requirements we feel that we will need.”

Injury has played a part in today’s selection, with prop Ben Alexander (knee) and No 8 Stephen Hoiles (Achilles) both added to the unavailable list from the original squad of 30 for the June Tests due to recent operations.

Hooker Tatafu Polota Nau has also not been considered as he awaits an operation on his ankle later this month that will have him ready to return in time for Australia’s Spring Tour.

Wingers Drew Mitchell and Lachie Turner, halfback Josh Valentine, props Pek Cowan and Laurie Weeks and hooker Huia Edmonds have all also missed out, after featuring in June’s squad for the Bundaberg Red Rugby Series.

In their place comes Queensland Reds forwards, prop James Slipper, loose forward Scott Higginbotham and lock Rob Simmons, inside centre Anthony Faingaa and Western Force loose forward Ben McCalman.

Slipper, last year’s Australian Under-20 Player of the Year, made his debut against England at Perth last month, and featured off the bench in three of the four June Tests after being promoted out of the Australian Barbarians squad when injury removed Alexander.

Faingaa and McCalman both impressed as part of the Barbarians squad during the two-match midweek series against England last month.

Simmons also featured in that series, returning from a month off due to a facial fracture in the second game, while Higginbotham was unavailable for the June squad due to a foot injury that was sustained in Queensland’s final Super 14 outing of the season.

“Anthony and Ben have both been rewarded for their performance against England, in terms of what they brought to those games, and what we feel they can add to our mix,” Deans says.

“They are both uncompromising players who are very direct, and showed playing for the Australian Barbarians that they have the ability to step up to the next level.”

Simmons and Higginbotham are in a similar category, Deans says.

“We included Rob in the original Barbarians squad as much for the experience as anything else, to get him up to date with our methods and familiar with our environment,” Deans says.

“He was coming off an injury break and we felt that background was important for him looking at the bigger picture. Being able to reintroduce him to the game during the second Barbarians outing was an added bonus, but the experience of the two weeks training with us offers him a good foundation for what is coming.”

While Higginbotham wasn’t available for the June series due to injury, Deans says he had always figured in the Wallabies plans, and was in a not dis-similar situation to that which surrounded halfback Will Genia last season.

Genia was injured late in the Reds’ 2009 Super 14 campaign and was unable to be introduced to the Wallabies in June, instead making his debut during the Tri Nations.

“If Scott can work out as well as Will has, we’ll be pretty happy and Australian rugby will be the better for it,” Deans says.

Higginbotham’s rise for Queensland this year has been timely with injury having sidelined both Australian Barbarians captain Hoiles, and the Qantas Wallabies regular No 8 Wycliff Palu, who is not due back until next season.

Genia (hand) and centre/wing Digby Ioane (shoulder) have been included, with both expected to be ready to go at some point during the early stages of the competition as they complete the rehabilitation from their recent injuries.

Just two hookers and two halfbacks have been named at this stage, although Deans says the involvement of 40 players through the June series means that the Wallabies do have players with recent background inside of the group to call on, should any reinforcement be required.

The returns of Moore and Robinson, who are both likely to play club rugby before Australia’s participation in the Tri Nations begins, adds experience to the squad.

“Having Stephen and Benn back on board is significant, both in terms of the expertise they bring in their respective positions, but also the knowledge and skill they will add to the whole group,” Deans says.

“The Tri Nations is the toughest rugby in the world, and their knowledge of the tournament from past experience will be of benefit to the whole group.”

This year sees the 15th edition of the annual three-nation tournament, which South Africa won last year.

The action begins on Saturday night in Auckland when the All Blacks host the Springboks in the first leg of a double-header on New Zealand soil, with the second match to be played in Wellington on Saturday week.

Australia, which has previously captured the title in 2000 and 2001, opens its campaign in Brisbane on 24 July when the Qantas Wallabies tackle the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium.

The corresponding match at the ground last year saw the Wallabies score a 21-6 victory over the reigning Rugby World Cup and eventual Tri Nations champions.

Australia and South Africa compete for the Mandela Trophy across their three matches in the Tri Nations. South Africa won the Trophy last year after Australia had been successful in 2008.

The Brisbane Test match is the first of three that the Wallabies play on successive weekends, with Australia hosting New Zealand in Melbourne the following Saturday, before the two teams fly to Christchurch for their second clash of the season at AMI Stadium.

The match in Melbourne heralds the start of the annual Bledisloe Cup rivalry, which for a third consecutive year will stretch beyond the Tri-Nations tournament, concluding with a return to Hong Kong on 30 October.

Australia and New Zealand first met in Hong Kong two years ago, with the All Blacks coming from behind at halftime to prevail 19-14.

Last year, the Bledisloe Cup rivalry was introduced to another Asian port when the teams played in Tokyo en-route to Europe for their respective Spring Tours.

The Wallabies must win three of the four Tests against the All Blacks to relieve the New Zealanders of the trophy, which Australia hasn’t held since it was surrendered to an All Black team co-coached by the current Qantas Wallabies mentor in 2003.

The Bledisloe Cup was first contested by Australia and New Zealand in 1931.

The second part of Australia’s Tri Nations programme sees a two-match tour of South Africa, kicking off in Pretoria on 28 August when the Wallabies play the first of two matches at altitude.

Australia has never won a Test at Loftus Versfeld, which is home to the Investec Super 14 champion Bulls, losing on all four previous visits, most recently in 2005.

The focus then switches to Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein where Australia will be bidding for its first win in the city since 1933.

Australia has won just two matches on the high veldt in the Republic, but has yet to record a success at altitude since South Africa returned from sporting isolation in 1992.

Australia’s sole wins on the high veldt came during its maiden appearance at Bloemfontein in 1933 and at Ellis Park in Johannesburg 30 years later.

After consecutive Tests in the Republic, the Wallabies return home for the final Tri Nations match against New Zealand at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

The Olympic venue has witnessed some tight contests between the two traditional rivals, including last year’s edition when just one point separated the sides, with New Zealand coming from behind at halftime to win 19-18.

Two years ago, Australia won a thrilling spectacle 34-19 at the ground.

This year’s Tri Nations finale will be the 11th match between the Qantas Wallabies and the All Blacks at ANZ Stadium, with Australia holding a six-wins-to-four advantage from the previous matches.

The Qantas Wallabies squad for the Bundaberg Red Tri Nations Series assembles in Sydney on Monday.

The Qantas Wallabies Squad for the 2010 Bundaberg Red Tri Nations Rugby Series is:
    Adam Ashley-Cooper Fullback-Wing-Outside Centre Brumbies
Berrick Barnes Inside centre-Flyhalf NSW Waratahs
    Kurtley Beale Fullback NSW Waratahs

Thought I'd do a bit of investigation of this. They are desperately short in a couple of positions, I reckno they need more than two extras.

I've arranged this by position and there are some galring holes. I tried to sort them into the most likely starters and there I found some problems. a fair bit of the team picks itself, but there were some difficult choices, Most notably Lock (I originally put Dean Mumm as a backrower, because I believe that's where he's best, but that only left Sharpie, Chis and Simmons at lock) I don't know whether I'd be throwing either Simmons or McCalman into the fray with a stack of responsibility in a 3N match, so Mumm was needed to step up

Priority 1 find a lock worth his salt to partner Sharpie

I then had a look at the backrow, whilst we're blessed with versatility here, there are some young boys and the quality ones aren't all that tall. We either play one of the big youngsters like McCalman or Simmons, or pretty much give up on the lineout against SA and play a more dynamic backrow. Both have pros and cons

Priority 2 Figure out whether Simmons or McCalman have the stones to start a match (that will help with priority 1)

We then move to Halfback, Burgess has a bit of the Cliff Palu smell about him, has always performed well against the easy teams and then manages to chew his own foot off against quality opposition......Genia didn't look 100% and might not be fit......they're the only two in the squad so they simply have to do the job. I'm not as worried about this position as others, since they both have experience and should be reliable

Priority 3 wrap Genia in cotton woll mid week and make sure he can give his best for 80 minutes on the weekends.

Inside backs.....interesting, this has to be the position with the most depth, but there isn't a combination which has clicked yet. I don't think anybody knows what to do here, because if Gits could learn to play with the team he'd be a shoo in, but it just hasn't been working with Quade.

Priority 3 Work the 10-12 like hell at training and tell both Giteau and Barnes that Anthony Faingaa will get the nod unless they prove themselves capable of playing good footy with Quade.

The outside backs....well, there's plenty of them, but when you try and pick an outside centre, two wings and a fullback the options start to dry up. Rob Horne hasn't jangled my bells too much, and I'd be looking for a Digby or Ashley Cooper #13, there's a bit more drive to come from that and the solid defence is sorely needed if Quade Gits and/or Berrick are inside them, but that cuts down options elsewhere Hynes will surely be rusty, as would any back brought in. Mitchell is a dangerous ball runner, but is prone to brain farts. Shepherd is just as dangerous on the counter and can kick far better but might not last the game, Overall we're a little short on speed out wide and it's not like Rod Davies is available.

Priority 4 find a quick, experienced, tough outside back who can kick and run the 100 under 10.5 (that'll be easy!)

    OK the summary
With our two free slots we need
    1 Hooker
    1 Halfback
    1 Lock
    1 fast winger

perhaps we could combine and get some versatile players.

a really solid halfback who can also hook the ball in the scrums

and a tall winger who isn't afraid of the lineout or the breakdown

    yeah, that'll work!

What has Mitchell done wrong? He deserves a spot.

Still can't work this Deans bloke out yet. Still think he's part of the blackness's campaign to win old Bill next year and still has secret meetings with Henry about who to put in the squad.

They got Gatland to coach Wales so that's made them shit and will help the darkness next year. They were very clever in paying the SA rugby board large amounts of money to put De Villiers in charge which will stop their only real threat.

This year he can use the "were experimenting for next year" so it won't look so bad when the wallabies get flogged in the tri nations.

Gits is lucky to be in the squad I would have left him out as well Even if it was just for a little while leaving him to go play club rugby for a while just so that he can get the hunger for professional rugby again. I think that is the plan with Drew.

Unfortunately the Committee wouldn't allow that PB...

    Great stuff Ben McC!

Nice post Gigs, in answer to one aspect, they are often using Brownie at #2 in the lineout and he has been quite effective, this allows the two genuine jumpers to worry about the middle and rear options with Bam sweeping the long throw.
Maybe not ideal, especially against #1 and #2 in the world but not a bad compromise when there isn't sufficient depth.

Intersting to see on the Wallabies web site they have listed Matt Giteau as Inside Centre, Flyhalf and Scrum Half. With Valentine being dropped from the squad and the inclusion of another inside centre into the team could Giteau play 9 again?

Hope not at the expense of Genia anyway.
Probably better than his one man band style at #10 though.

I'm reeeeeeally disappointed Sheehan didn't make an appearance. I rate him ahead of Burgess and can't believe Deans hasn't got him in their

How Beale continues to not get dropped, I just don't know.

Elsom need to be dropped from the big (C) and Higginbotham comes in -
    6 - Hodgsen
    7 - Pocock
    8 - Higginbotham

I have no problems with Brownie, but Higginbotham will get the nod ahead of him I think.

Right, assuming all are fit and John Eales and Jesus don't fill the last two spots, this is what I would do in terms of selection for the 1st Test:

    1 Benn Robinson
    2 Stephen Moore
    3 Salesi Ma'afu
    4 Ben McCalman
    5 Nathan Sharpe
    6 Rocky Elsom
    7 David Pocock
    8 Scott Higginbotham

    9 Will Genia
    10 Quade Cooper
    11 Digby Ioane
    12 Anthony Faingaa
    13 Adam Ashley-Cooper
    14 Peter Hynes
    15 James O'Connor

    16 Saia Faingaa
    17 James Slipper
    18 Rob Simmons
    19 Matt Hodgson
    20 Luke Burgess
    21 Matt Giteau
    22 Berrick Barnes

    Reasons:

    1. Historically not that successful in Brisbane, the Boks will be coming off two hard matches in NZ, possibly carrying a depleted Squad on the way home to the Republic.

    2. The Boks will be expecting and preparing for the usual, which is a safe and predictable Backline revolving around Giteau, with elusive runners rather than power.

    3. This is the longest period of unscrutinised training Deans will have for the whole 3N to work up a left field approach, with the Linus blanket of the older troups to fall back on if it goes wrong, rather than having to expose new players following injuries to the incumbents and even less cover on the bench.

    4. Gets the debuts out of the way (both for the players and the media) and on home ground for three of the four.

    5. All four debuts are hard running aggressive players.

    6. Maximises the benefit of the Genia-Cooper-Faingaa Super 14 partnership that was so productive this season.

    7. As fellow Brumbies, Moore will get more out of Ma'afu than Saia would get out of Ma'afu and Robinson (again, assuming fit) is a no brainer selection. You are really looking at an all Reds combination of lesser individuals or a mixed combo of stronger individuals that need to gel as a unit.

    8. While based on hard runners, Cooper and O'Connor still offer the variety of some flair.

    9. Can't afford the penalties that Daley, Brownie and Mumm (and a lesser extent Beale) tend to give away.

    10. Some other reason I can't think of...

    I like it Burgs.

Only change I'd make is Shepherd in for Hynes. Hynes to the bench. Say what you like about Shepherd but the fact is that every time he's worn a Wallabies jersey he's put in a very good performance. Otherwise you've then got a great mix. The beauty of Cooper as a 10 is that his pass is so good you don't need so much of a ball playing 12. You can have JOC at 15 doing vaguely the same job. But you've still got AAC, Ioane, Shepherd and Faingaa who are tough to bring down and are proven try scorers.

Would also change Higginbotham and Elsom around.

Good points James, but from the lists I have seen Shep didn't make the cut yet?
For me he is a known quantity rather than an experiment, probably more so (for me) than JO'C and under different circumstances (including him being selected) would be very tempted to have #15 Shepherd and #22 O'Connor at the expense of Barnes.

With the back of the scrum, while the above is my preferred, I would be almost as happy to try any mix of Elsom in 4-6-8, McCalman in 4-6-8, Higginbotham in 6-8 and Simmons 4-6. I think Elsom, Higginbotham and McCalman's best position is #6, though I believe Higginbotham could develop into a terrific #8, so it gets a bit tricky, especially with Hodgson (to me a traditional #7 but now a recognised 6-8 option) making a case as well.

The one constant unfortunately is that Elsom is now un-droppable, at least at this stage of the season. I would like to see how he goes at #4 as the increasingly common mobile big man to Sharpie's power big man.
To me he is becoming like Giteau, one of the best talents in the squad but not the best option in any given position.
It is one of two reasons his selection as Captain is a mistake, the other being he isn't the leader, as is being proved on the paddock in recent Tests.

Higgenbotham gets a bit messy at the back of the scrum thus why houston was preferred there at the reds. Elsom has had more experience at 8 and would enjoy the space to run more. I would have McCalman partnering Sharpie, Higgs the flanker and Elsom at 8.

I think Hodgson has been wasted sitting on the bench for most of the games. Us force supporters know what he's capable of but it seems those on the east coast need to see for themselves. I think his energy would make a difference if they gave him at least 15-20 minutes at the end of the game. The england/ireland series was a wasted oppurtunity to blood him in place of brown and elsom when they had little impact late in the games.
