Attwood stays amid seven changes
Australian Barbarians v England
Venue: Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford Date: Tuesday, 15 June KO: 1030 BST

England have made seven changes to their midweek team to face the Australian Barbarians with Dave Attwood keeping his place in the second row.

The Gloucester lock was cited for two incidents in the first match against the two sides, a 28-28 draw in Perth, but the charges were thrown out.

Joe Worsley has replaced Chris Robshaw as captain and blind-side flanker.

Wing David Strettle and centre Dominic Waldouck will make their first starts of the tour in Gosford.

Props Jon Golding and Paul Doran-Jones also start, with coach Martin Johnson insisting that the idea of England's five-match tour was to give as many players game time as possible.

A switch to second row for Dan Ward-Smith means that James Haskell, Worsley and Steffon Armitage combine in the back row, while Phil Dowson, who joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Hendre Fourie, is on the bench with Wasps hooker Rob Webber.

Johnson has admitted he will have a "quiet word" with Attwood, whose two stamping charges - one of which left opposite number Mitch Chapman needing 17 stitches in his head - were thrown out by the judicial officer after England successfully argued the citing commissioner should not have been from Australia. (Yeah, right!)

Haskell is the only member of the 22-man Test squad asked to start the match, although Mathew Tait is on the bench.

"We have made some changes and there is an element of giving guys an opportunity to play so it is not just form related," said Johnson.

"It was always the plan to give guys like Joe and James Haskell a start on this tour, rather than just coming off the bench in Test matches."

He added: "Our first game against the Barbarians was similar to the Test. When we did things well we were effective, when we made mistakes we were punished.

"Coming off our first two matches we can improve. That team has improved a heck of a lot in training this week.

"They did a good job in the time they had to get ready for last week but after looking at the game and analysing it the training what they have done has been at a higher level."

The Barbarians team includes a return for Wallaby hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau in the hope he can prove his fitness ahead of Saturday's second Test in Sydney.
