17 West Australians in Emirates Western Force Academy

Congratulations to the seventeen lads who have the honour of being the inaugural Academy Squad Members! I'm sure it will make the possibilities very "real" to many other young aspiring rugby players.

I look forward to following the careers of these players in the future.

    The 17 inaugural members are:

    Dan Bailey (Nedlands)
    Will Brock (Nedlands)
    Tim Carslaw (Hale School)
James Dougall (Safety Bay Senior High School)
    Ryan Lenegan (UWA)
    Ben Linegaard (Associates)
    Kieren Longbottom (Cottesloe)
    Kris Martinick (Perth Gold (2004))
    Nathan McCourt (Perth-Bayswater)
    Angus Neilson (Hale School)
    Scott Nimmo (Associates)
Adam Scari (Kelmscott Senior High School)
    Andrew Smith (Rockingham)
    Ryan Tyrrell (Cottesloe)
    Dean Tyrrell (Rockingham)
    Justin Webster (Nedlands)
    Tristen Winnall (Associates)

I reckon there are 3 guys on that list who have the potential to go all the way

Will Brock (Nedlands) - played 7's for Australia in 2004/5
Ryan Lenegan (UWA) - played Australian Universities 2004 & 5
Kris Martinick (Perth Gold (2004)) - played Australian Universities 2004 and has just had a season in Canberra with East.

Rugby at Hale appears to be going ahead in leaps and bounds since Stuart Meade has arrived as Principal.
I believe he previously was involved as a co-coach or head coach of the Australian Schoolboys and has a background coaching the 1sts at Cranbrook in the CAS comp in Sydney.
This season saw five Hale players in the WA Open Schoolboys and three went on to the Australian Division II XV.

Further on the Hale talent, I believe Ben Lindegaard and Scott Nimmo are also from Hale School.
Would be interesting to keep tabs on the schools (PSA or Guvo) that these fellas have been developed from.

    Dan Bailey (?Hong Kong?)
    Will Brock (Trinity College, PSA)
    Tim Carslaw (Hale School, PSA)
James Dougall (Safety Bay Senior High School)
    Ryan Lenegan (Hale School, PSA)
    Ben Linedgaard (Hale School, PSA)
    Kieren Longbottom (Challenger College?)
    Kris Martinick (?)
    Nathan McCourt (?)
    Angus Neilson (Hale School, PSA)
    Scott Nimmo (Hale School, PSA)
Adam Scari (Kelmscott Senior High School)
    Andrew Smith (?)
    Ryan Tyrrell (?)
Dean Tyrrell (Warnbro Community High School)
    Justin Webster (?)
    Tristen Winnall (?)

Anyone help fill in the question marks?

A mate of mine was at Cranbrook when Stuart Meade was coaching there, so know of him through that.
The player info is mainly through snooping around on the net at squad selection lists etc.
Schoolboys teams normally quote the school of origin when they publish the teams.
Also, I played at Scotch a "couple" of years back so am always interested when athletes from one of the PSA schools pop up in the media. Never seem to be in the city at the right time to watch the Scotch XV play which is a shame as I reckon some of that Schoolboy action is the best rugby to watch in WA, they play how the game was intended rather than like International rugby.
Couple of Scotch boys doing ok at the moment in Junior and Schoolboy selection are Cameron Sinden and Barry Mansfield but they didn't make the final Academy list unfortunately.

In further Academy developments, according to this weekends Sunday Times, Hale School teacher Steve McFarland has been appointed coach of the Academy.McFarland has an impressive coaching resume` in WA and South Africa.
He was assistant coach with the Golden Lions Under 21s, with a premiership in the 02 U/21 Currie Cup, and assisted with lineouts in host Super 12 franchise Johburg based Cats. With Selector and Talent Scout experience, Mc Farlands playing career was highlighted with stints in the Transvaal U/20, Eastern Transvaal and Transvaal B XVs.
McFarland has guided Hale School to an amazing single loss from three seasons in the PSA comp (this means at the least 30 PSA matches but may include tour games as well, Hale posters please inform) and also had an Assistant role with the undefeated Perth Gold this year.

For mine, it is a fantastic development that we have gained the experience of such succesful development coach and it will be of great benefit that not only does McFarland already posses such a great knowledge of local junior/schoolboy rugby but he has infact already coached many of the inaugural squad members at Hale or Perth Gold and will have an understanding of any unique issues confronting Western Australian junior players.

    Hi,

This is my first post on here.... so be gentle.

Will Brock (Nedlands) from what I understand is already the player that has been lined up as a the "local star".

    Has anyone seen him play?

    Cheers

    Jeremy

    G'day Heavensgame, welcome to TWF.
Hope you enjoy your experience and get involved with the forums, the site is only as good as we help Coach to make it.
Feel free to make an entry in to the Intro section and tell us a little about your rugby experience or the like, with a handle like yours I'm sure you have a bit of passion for the game!?
I haven't seen Brock play but I'm told by those that have that he is a great prospect but perhaps lost a little focus this season after a fantastic 2004 being selected in several Australian Rep teams.
The word is he may have found a new interest in the social aspects of life......
Hopefully the honour of being in the inaugural Force Academy will refocus him to pursue his obvious potential.

A bit of an update on the Academy Squad, Dan Bailey did go to school in Hong Kong.
He played Under 19's for Hong Kong and also represented Hong Kong at the Asian Games Sevens.
He joined Neddies as a Colt and played A Grade there and played for Perth Gold last season.
The updated listing of the schools origins of these players is as follows:

    Dan Bailey (Hong Kong)
    Will Brock (Trinity College, PSA)
    Tim Carslaw (Hale School, PSA)
James Dougall (Safety Bay Senior High School)
    Ryan Lenegan (Hale School, PSA)
    Ben Linedgaard (Hale School, PSA)
    Kieren Longbottom (Challenger College?)
    Kris Martinick (?)
    Nathan McCourt (?)
    Angus Neilson (Hale School, PSA)
    Scott Nimmo (Hale School, PSA)
Adam Scari (Kelmscott Senior High School)
    Andrew Smith (?)
    Ryan Tyrrell (?)
Dean Tyrrell (Warnbro Community High School)
    Justin Webster (?)
    Tristen Winnall (?)

I understand from media that Joseph Egan from the Northern Territory has joined the squad as well, any others from outside of this group that people know of?

Anyone help fill in the question marks for Martinick, McCourt, Smith, Ryan Tyrrell, Webster or Winnall?
