yeah curtin gets a lot of players from the campus, but not all of them... there are a lot of older blokes who come down who have never been to uni.

i dont think a lot of people go by geography, they usually have a mate who plays, and goes with them, assuming it isnt too far. Unless its the kids, then that would definately be location.

The Uni / Curtin issue is a bit different to the others.

Uni did a deal with Curtin to provide a pathway for its players a year or two ago but Uni renegged ie took some good players (eg the big prop) but never sent any players the other way. No surprise there.

Curtin felt a bit ripped (justifiably) off and I suspect will be a bit cautious of their Uni mates in the future.

Brief history of the SOUTHERN LIONS RUGBY CLUB - A well est' and respected club!

In 1987 the club was established as the Fremantle-Leeming RUFC and took the colours of the original Fremantle Rugby Union Club. Kingsley Bailey, one of our founding members and an original member of the Fremantle club continues to be an active member of the committee and leads our fund raising sub-committee. Our name was changed in 1994 to Leeming RUFC. With the aim to grow, in 1998 we vigorously started recruiting and attracted committee, coaches and players. Given the influx of talent and the desire to grow to further accommodate the development of our juniors we changed our name to Southern Lions which has been abbreviated to South's Rugby.

The Lion is our club’s emblem and the change from a suburb name was done in order to give us freedom in our future growth and expansion. This desire came to fruition in late 2003 when we completed an arrangement with Murdoch University and the Guild to move onto the campus. The university years were a period of strong growth for the club and it wasn't long before it again outgrew its facilities.

In April 2010 the club moved to new clubrooms in Hammond Road, Success. These are state-of-the-art facilities built by the City of Cockburn to serve community needs for netball and field sports. Cockburn wanted a strong, established club to take on the lead role in this new facility, and in the Southern Lions they found just what they were looking for!
