Tension in the air as Mitchell insists he won't leave early

Western Force coach John Mitchell played a straight bat at a frosty press conference this morning, his first since announcing yesterday that he would not seek to extend his stay in Perth once his current deal runs out in 2011.

Mitchell repeatedly said he would see out the remainder of his Super 14 contract.

While Force chief executive Vern Reid left the door open for the former All Blacks coach to be replaced in time for the 2011 campaign, Mitchell said he wanted to remain at the helm until the end of next season.

"I'm committed totally to my contract right until the end," Mitchell said today.

"That's been communicated right along and nothing will change.

"Looking forward to the weekend, big time.

"Looking forward to today's training session. Nothing changes.

"I'm no different to a player that comes out of contract in 2011. I've just been totally transparent on my future."

Meanwhile, the Force's horror run of injuries has continued, with scrumhalf Brett Sheehan (hamstring), hooker Ryan Tyrrell (neck) and Sam Wykes (quad) ruled out of Saturday's clash with the Bulls in Perth and winger Scott Staniforth (hip) in massive doubt.

Tyrrell's injury is the most serious, with the 26-year-old to undergo surgery on his neck which will keep him out for the remainder of the season.

the media are so lame. i mean, he stated maybe 400000000 times that he is committed to teh team til his contract runs out. how many times does he have to say it til the media shuts the hell up and asks how the team are going etc??

What it means is he's going to get paid the rest of the money that's owed to him. If he's coaching till the end he'll do the best he can. If the Force decide to hire someone else before that he'll be happy to cash his checks while he's doing something else.

I spoke with Mitch today..he is fully committed to the end of his contract has no plans of where to next..."too far away"... Wants to leave on a high...Northern Hemisphere not favoured...

I agree the media should change the record....Give the guy a break....!!

Could ANY coach have faired any better with the injuries sustained....????

....well, I must admit I've been querying tactics, plus pre-season conditioning (as they don't seem to be able to last 80 minutes), but I am not questioning that Mitch isn't 100% committed until the last game.

That's a very good point. The S&C coach is as important as the head coach although they are seldom talked about.

True, but virtually NOBODY on the park was expected to play an 80 minute game in the pre-season!

Surely you'd be conditioning less aerobic and more anaerobic in that situation
