THERE will be a real sense of homecoming for James O'Connor when he returns to Brisbane to play for the Western Force against the Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, and not just because he will get to attend his old boys' dinner while he's in town.
O'Connor, the 19-year-old "veteran" of 14 Tests for the Wallabies, can expect to be the centre of attention on both occasions.
"It was against the Reds there that I made my Super rugby debut, so this match is pretty special to me," said O'Connor, who also played a starring role at Suncorp last September when he scored a try in the Wallabies' stunning 21-6 victory over the Springboks.
Certainly the Reds will have targeted him as the player they must stop if they are to achieve their goal of winning Super rugby matches on successive weekends.
Much as he would have liked to have gone head-to-head at five-eighth with close friend Quade Cooper, the Reds' in-form playmaker, O'Connor accepts that he almost certainly will not retain the 10 jersey for this match.
With former All Black David Hill being rushed in to fill that role as the Force's marquee player following the injury to Andre Pretorius, O'Connor will either revert to fullback or slot in alongside the NZ ace at inside centre.
