Dubai delivers superb start to Sevens season
    (IRB.COM) Friday 4 December 2009

    PrintEmail

Alexander Yanyuskin in action during Russia's match against EnglandSouth Africa have kicked their Dubai defence off to a winning start on day one at 'the Sevens' stadium, going unbeaten and improving throughout the day to top their group with ease. New captain Paul Delport led from the front as Paul Treu's Boks also set out to defend their first IRB Sevens World Series title, won in Edinburgh in May.

With the IOC decision in October having given Sevens Rugby an extra prominence around the world, millions of eyes were watching the action at the first major tournament since Sevens became part of the Olympic family.

    Video: Play of the Day

Pool A (South Africa, Australia, Wales, Arabian Gulf)

South Africa saved their best for last on day one in Dubai, scoring five unanswered tries against an impressive Australia side to win 29-0 and top the group. Old hands Mzwandile Stick and Ryno Benjamin both scored twice and captain Paul Delport once as the World Series and Dubai champions underlined their superiority.

Earlier the Boks were made to work hard by World Cup winners Wales in their opening match, before running out 28-14 winners. The Boks then beat Arabian Gulf 36-7 with Chase Minnaar scoring two tries.

A young Australia team also won their first two matches against the same opposition, notably coming through a tough game with Wales, 14-7, with Clinton Sills and Ed Quirk scoring tries.

The young Welsh side proved how competitive they stand to become this season by seeing off Arabian Gulf with ease in their final match, 50-0.

Pool B (Fiji, Samoa, Scotland, Zimbabwe)

Samoa and Fiji dominated Pool B and at the end of day one there was nothing between them as they drew 12-12, Samoa topping the group on points difference.

The Fijians were in confident mood early on, first against Scotland and then in their second match against Zimbabwe. William Ryder eased his way back in at the top level but captain Emosi Vucago has so far stolen the show with five tries to become the tournament's leading try scorer so far with Nick Edwards of the USA.

For Samoa, Mikaele Pesamino was in imperious form in their opening victories against the same opposition, while Zimbabwe and Scotland drew a fine match 17-17.

For further details of all matches, go to the results page and then click on the desired match.

Pool C (England, Kenya, USA, Russia)

Youngsters Dan Norton, Dan Caprice and Nick Royle all caught the eye as England won all of their matches on day one, including a final absorbing match with Kenya, to top the pool.

Norton got Ben Ryan's side off to a flyer with a first half hat trick against USA, before Caprice grabbed a brace in a tough game against Russia.

Humphrey Kayange scored two tries in each of Kenya's opening wins against Russia and the USA, the second of those a 31-26 thriller in which the new Eagle Nick Edwards scored four tries, but even a superb contribution from his brother Collins Injera could not stop England winning the final match of the pool.

With Sevens now an Olympic sport, in coming years match-ups between USA and Russia could well decide Cup titles, but today the two faced off for third place in the pool, Russia just getting the better of the Americans 14-12, Igor Galinovskiy scoring the winner for the European champions.

For further details of all matches, go to the results page and then click on the desired match.

Pool D (New Zealand, Argentina, France, Portugal)

Sherwin Stowers scored four tries against Argentina in the pool decider and seven in the day to help New Zealand to a comfortable first day in Dubai.

DJ Forbes and Ben Souness each scored twice as Gordon Tietjens' NZ side started with a win against Portugal and Save Tokula and Stowers each scored two against France.

Argentina also started with two wins, Hernan Olivari touching down for a brace in the Pumas' win against France and then Nicolas Bruzzone scoring three in the win against Portugal.

In the all-European match-up Portugal got the better of France, Frederico Oliveira scoring twice to earn them a better draw in Saturday's Bowl quarter finals.

Dubai Sevens: Holders SA knocked out
    (IRB.COM) Saturday 5 December 2009

    PrintEmail

Ben Gollings scores the winner for England in sudden-death extra time against ArgentinaIn a breathless hour and a half of thrilling Rugby Sevens Fiji, New Zealand, England and Samoa won through to the semi finals on the final day of the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens.

Fiji caused the first upset by knocking out the number one seeds and defending champions South Africa to set the tone for more pulsating action that brought the crowds to the edge of their seats.

The Fijians came through against the World Series champions and will now play New Zealand after they came from behind to edge Kenya at the death.

England needed sudden death extra time to beat Argentina, to the delight of the ex-pat crowd, before Lolo Lui capped a remarkable sequence of matches by landing a fine conversion from the touchline to give Samoa a one-point victory against Australia.
